Andy Stanley Laments That The ‘Entire Bible’ Has Become The Church’s ‘Authority’

As North Point Community Church pastor Andy Stanley continues to be embroiled in a series of controversies featuring the revelation of widespread LGBTQ-affirming pastors, church leaders, and sentiment within their churches (see endnotes), Stanley is going through a sermon series where he outlines the fundamentals of the faith that must be believed to be a Jesus follower.

In the seventh installment of this eight-part series, Stanley defends his ‘Fundamental List.’ He compares it to the Apostles Creed, acknowledging that while the Creed may be more ‘theologically robust,’ it was also formulated when the church was sanctioning activities that were ‘unchristlike.’

Because Stanley’s approach is to elevate the ‘red letters’ – the direct words of Jesus – above other scriptures, he suggests that the church’s historical misuse of the Bible for ‘harmful nonsense’ stems from treating Jesus’ words in Matthew 28:18 (And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me) as “just another verse in the Bible,” and equating it with other scripture.

Stanley argues that the problem lies in the church considering the ‘entire Bible’ as its authority. In his view, it should be Jesus, not the Bible, who is the church’s authority. This line of circular reasoning rarely makes sense, given that the only trustworthy information we have about Jesus is found in the scriptures. He believes this perspective, supposedly held by first-century Judeans, prevented them from misrepresenting Jesus.

Do you know why the church has been able to leverage the Bible for all kinds of harmful nonsense through the ages? Do you know why the church and church leaders and Christian people have been able to leverage the Bible for all kinds of harmful things that end up harming other people who claim to be Christians?

It’s because this statement, this statement (Matthew 28:18, And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”) has been reduced to just another verse in the Bible, equated with every other statement or verse in our sacred text.

And so the Bible, the entire Bible became the church’s authority. But the Bible says ‘Jesus is our ultimate and final authority’. More importantly, Jesus said ‘Jesus is our ultimate authority’.

The words of Jesus are the final word because he is our King, right? Now, as Jewish men and women sitting there listening to Jesus, let me tell you what they heard that we don’t hear because we aren’t Judeans, first century Judeans. Here’s what they heard when Jesus said, ‘all authority and heaven and earth belongs to me.’ Here’s what they thought they heard him say, or here’s the implication of what he said:

‘Ladies and gentlemen, Moses was your guy. Torah was your text. But the King has arrived. The shadow caster is here.’ So when they saw him, they worshiped him. They got what we miss. And because they got what we miss, they never misrepresented their King.

For other non-LGBTQ Controversies, he made waves for encouraging Christians to essentially throw out the Old Testament, arguing that believers should “unhitch” themselves from portions of Old Testament Scripture. He denied the Genesis account, saying God only said it to ‘accommodate to our capacity,’ repeatedly told his congregants, ‘I’m not arguing that the bible is correct,’ and told his church the ‘foundation of our faith is not the whole bible.’

Stanley argued that Jesus’ birth and the events surrounding the nativity doesn’t really matter, thus casting doubt upon his supernatural birth by saying “If somebody can predict their own death and then their own resurrection, I’m not all that concerned about how they got into the world” and “Christianity doesn’t hinge on the truth or even the stories around the Birth of Jesus.”’

    1. My most recent pay test was for a 12-hour-per-week internet job for 9,500 dollars. For months, my sister’s friend has been making an average of 15,000, and she puts in about 20 hours every week. As soon as I gave it a try, I was shocked at how simple it was

    2. To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20

For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

  2. There is ZERO homosexual affirmation in Scripture if one is reading the text with the same textual rules used to interpret any literature. There is no getting around the basis of destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah or the Scriptures that says
“NO one who practices homosexuality will enter the kingdom of heaven.” Romans 1 is inescapable. So the new approach is to disavow the text itself? Seriously hellish! These demonic pulpit heathens try to twist the text into a pretzel with nonsense, but it says what it says….except to people who want to experience what Scripture clearly condemns and still claim a free pass to heaven. It’s not Christianity, it’s make it-up-as-you-go absurdities. Andy Stanley is
    a heretic.

    1. FULLY CONCUR…I watched his dad for some time. Then I read the WORD and have ever since 2013.

It is so obviously why ‘they’ hate the Bible, IT IS A CONFRONTATION and ‘they’ simply cannot handle this.

He called ‘them’ an ABOMINATION. I see it this clearly so.

    1. On top of being evil, he’s also quite stupid. I don’t think he has a clue concerning what the bible really says and means about pretty much anything.

    2. FEAR NOT. Jesus saw him before he was born. And sadly, like so many kids today, they go far astray from their father’s beliefs coupled with ‘dumbification’ (aka: education), they make stuff up.

It is in the BIBLE. Andy will see his very own TORMENT forever one day…I think he also enjoys BOYS.

      PERVERTING THE WORD OF GOD.

  3. Watch and see what the Lord will do to those wolves that lead the sheep astray..
Charles Stanley did not rebuke his son and his “loyalty “ will need to be something he is responsible for. Stanley is a worldly traitor and not of the true faith. The Bible warns us that there will be a fa lying away in the last days. God is not mocked and will defend His wonderful name and His church.

  4. This is just a modern version of “higher criticism” that started decimating the church in the 1800’s, but without anything that resembles academic scholarship. He literally says whatever he wants and sprinkles “this is what (I think) Jesus meant to say to the Judeans” dust on it to magically give it credibility. There is no fear of God with such people and it would do some good for them to consider these other “red letter” passages.

    Matthew 5:17-19
Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and so teaches others, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

    Luke 17:1-2
And He said to His disciples, It is inevitable that stumbling blocks should come, but woe to him through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to stumble.

    John 17:17
Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth.

  5. Nothing surprises me with this guy anymore. Pray for discernment for his poor congregation.

  6. That is one of the dumbest false dichotomies I’ve ever heard.

He’s clearly been given over to a reprobate (non functioning) mind. The more he contorts, the dumber he gets.

    1. His points point to the fact HE CANNOT READ or he has some other ‘interpretation’ going on.

And if Charles died, he is a rollin in his grave, and if not, then I have confirmed why I ceased to watch him, for his truth was not in MY BIBLE, I became more knowledgeable through READING and STUDYING and receiving His wondrous gifts of life daily.

As believers, one must READ WHAT IS IN (an OLDER ‘VERSION’) BIBLE. And then HIS TRUTH WIOLL SET YOU FREE.

And HIS PEACE GOES BEYOND UNDESTANDING will come into you and YOU WILL KNOW BEFORE IT HAPPENS where TRUTH is.

  7. The final red text is given in the last chapter of God’s word, in Revelation 22. Here’s what the second to last red text in that chapter says, along with the preceding verse:

’15 Outside are the dogs and sorcerers and the sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood.

16“I, Jesus, have sent my angel to testify to you about these things for the churches. I am the root and the descendant of David, the bright morning star.”’

That’s Jesus Himself condemning porneia, in His literal final words to us, in the last chapter of His word. (which He also did in Matt. 19, Mark 7:21, and other scriptures).

That’s the final red text, Andy.

  8. The red text says that Jesus directly gave authority to the Disciples, and through the Holy Spirit gave them the words to speak. Jesus directly appeared to the Apostle Paul and did the same with him, in Acts 9. That’s red text. That covers all of the epistles. In 2nd Peter 3, Peter again verifies Paul’s authenticity, as well as the contents of Paul’s letters.

All of them, all throughout the NT, refer to the Old Testament, including Jesus Himself. The Apostles make it clear that the moral law still applies, as Jesus made it clear in Mark 7, while the ceremonial law does not. The red text verifies the importance and significance of the Old Testament, and therefore demands it’s inclusion. The law is what condemns all who do not repent. Through the law God established what is and is not sin. The definition of sin did not change. What is an is not sin did not change. The rules did not change. And it is by those same rules, and that same sin for which all who do not repent and submit to the Lord Jesus Christ as Lord, Savior and Master, will be eternally condemned.

Every single word of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, is necessarily included specifically because the red text says it is necessary. Without the OT, establishment of the fact that mankind has been in a sinful condition since the fall, and specifically what sin is, there is no Gospel.

A man who graduated from Dallas Theological Seminary already knows this. Stanley knows full well that he is being deceitful. He is doing this intentionally.

  9. I guess since Christ didn’t say, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God,” then we just disregard Paul? Ridiculous.

    1. Without Paul there is NO CHRISTANITY at all. Antioch.

I love reading how people mostly quote from the four Epistles (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) or the Old Testament not knowing that there was an ABSOLUTE change in venues as PAUL became OUR APOSTLE , the apostle to the GENTILES (heathens). And the HUGE difference in giving God His due:
Believing in His begotten Son, Jesus the Christ. B E L I E V E. Throw out unbelief. Then His peace comes -OH MY GOD, thank YOU.

  10. I can only pray his congregation shrinks week by week.

And there is only one more lesson in this abominable ‘teaching’

And then he will move on to his latest heresy
