Elevation Church Reveals Why They Don’t Use Words Like ‘Resurrection’ On Easter Invites (Hint, It’s a Terrible Reason)

Pro Church Tools recently sat down with Nicki Shearer, Elevation Church’s Digital Content Director. She is responsible for overseeing all the copy coming out of Elevation Church, the 25,000-member multisite led by Steven Furtick. She sets the tone of church emails, blesses or nixes the language of social media posts, and develops guidelines for responding to events in the news.

In a wide-ranging interview, Shearer explains that while they may use certain phrases in church, Elevation Church doesn’t use words like “resurrection,” “calvary,” or “blood of Jesus” on its Easter invites, as that language will “immediately make someone feel like an outsider.”

  1. They are just recycling the entire “seeker sensitive” crap that churches starting doing in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Have to keep the money flowing you know. He is just a false prophet that sadly too many “tickling ears” want to hear. I can’t watch him for 30 seconds because he makes my skin crawl.

    1. How does using words that lost people know to begin a conversation have anything to do with Tickling Ears? When the Gospel is shared when they arrive. Our church does the same. As do I one sharing Christ with the lost.

  2. “It makes someone feel like an outsider.” I hate to tell him, but that’s the point. There are those who follow Christ and are saved, and those who do not and are not. Easter is the demonstration of the Resurrection to eternal life – for Christians.

  3. Frankly, I doubt individuals seeking God are looking for Him in a place that resembles the fallen world they are trying to escape.
Furtick and Elevation Church remain the poster child for the seeker-sensitive, bread and circuses, self-help, mile-wide/one-inch deep contemporary American megachurch.

  4. Watch the video–she laughs about not using the words, “resurrection” or “blood of Christ”, like it’s an embarrassment. Will these people ever learn that preaching Christ crucified is a stumbling block to the Jew and foolishness to the Gentiles? Our Lord is not the target of a slick promo campaign that apologetically presents the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. He is GOD, worthy of all worship and glory.

  5. For us the most important thing is the bathtub, that’s why it didn’t matter when the baby got tossed out with the bathwater.

  6. This is disturbing, that they would not mention the blood of Jesus, that’s what covers our sins! Resurrection is not a dirty word, I asked 100 non believers if these words elevation church are not saying would keep them from coming g to church if they decided to go to church, only one said yes and I asked him why, he said I would take it as though they were only trying to convert me, and I don’t want to be converted. The other 99 had simular statements but one said if those words were mentioned it would be fine, because growing up they remember hearing their grandparents or parents talking about it. 14 of the hundred I spoke with at different times of coarse gave their hearts to Jesus and promised they would not go to elevation church to grow in Christ!

  7. It was never the word that made me feel like an outsider. It was the people in the congregation. I heard the truth and found a church where people loved me, biblically, but did not at all lessen or change the word. It took a long time but it was always the truth and how Christian’s treated me truly made the difference.

  8. One more huuuuuuge piece of evidence why God delivered me from this ministry! Thank you Jesus 🙏🏼

  9. If everyone could hear what the church ladies are saying behind their back, there would be no churches. ☎️
