Megachurch Pastor Tries to Give Edgy Illustration, then Swiftly Apologizes

Megachurch pastors continue to steal Tony Campolo’s call to evangelism, a move we recently saw when Pastor Noble said it just a few weeks ago. Unlike Noble and Campolo, however, not all pastors are willing to commit themselves wholly to the bit and use the original cuss word, such as when Church by The Glades pastor David Hughes tested it out last month in his Unbothered Sermon series, and then immediately apologized to the children for using such ‘salty’ language.

Hughes and his church is known for their extravagant attempts to keep their members entertained, in the past few months alone, they played a cover of Run D.M.C’s sleazy and sexual song Walk this Way in church, performed Kendrick Lamar’s N95, only cleaned up and sanitized for church audiences, removing the curse words and racial epitaphs for a sermon illustration, put on a Willy Wonka Christmas worship service’ put on crazy ‘Baby Shark’ mashup during service, replete with smoke and canons! and put on an Addams family themed service.

Speaking on the need to be more evangelistically minded, Hughes declared:

Three things: #1: That’s a huge number. 1,940,000 are people facing an eternity without Jesus. #2: a lot of you don’t give a damn about it. #3: I know that because you’re way more bothered I said the word ‘damn’ then I just told you 1,940,000 people need Jesus. And kids, kids I apologize for the language, I’m just trying to make a- don’t you use that and blame that on me right, I’m just trying to make a point.

  1. Not the dumbest thing I’ve heard from a pew lately. Frankly, he’s absolutely correct.
