Rick Warren Apologizes for Church’s ‘Racist’ Sunday School Lesson

Saddleback megachurch pastor and The Purpose-driven Life author Rick Warren, recently featured here for having racially segregated worship services, saying that Christians have no discernment and don’t care about black people, and arguing that churches aren’t being persecuted by COVID Restrictions, has come out and apologized for a Sunday-school curriculum video that featured Asian stereotypes.

He explains in a Twitter post, In response to the children’s Sunday school curriculum video. We ask for your forgiveness, that the Children’s Pastor dressed up as a martial arts instructor to teach a lesson, resulting in Warren feeling horrified and scandalized that such a blatantly “racially insensitive,” “un-Christlike,” and “demeaning” act happened under his watch.

The video in question is posted below:

According to Warren, they’ve since instituted policies and processes to “ensure that any curriculum that might be insensitive, hurtful or demeaning never sees the light of day.” He concludes:

Because all churches are made up of imperfect people, I can’t promise you that failings will never happen in our church family, but I CAN promise you that we will always own up to our failings immediately, admit them freely and correct them as fast as we can.

  1. In light of this, shouldn’t he fire himself? I mean, the buck stops with him, doesn’t it? Maybe this is a good excuse for him not to have most or all the power in his church, which I have to assume uses a congregational form of government. It makes me wonder how biblically sound their children’s Sunday school lessons are in the first place if they have to resort to such a nonsense.
