Controversial Arizona pastor Steven Anderson is embroiled in a new controversy after recordings surfaced of him saying that it’s ‘evil’ and ‘wicked’ for wives to call the police if they are being physically abused by their husband, saying in a clip:
“I’m not saying your husband should SLAP YOU DOWN, but if your husband slaps you down and you call the cops, YOU’RE EVIL…What an evil broad. What an evil woman.”
Anderson, the firebrand KJV-Onlyist and NIFB leader of the 300-member Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, AZ, has the dubious distinction of being banned from 34 countries, including every English-speaking developed country.
You don’t get to say things like “If I had a button right here on this pulpit, I could just push this button and every fag would just fall over dead. I would push it until it breaks,” without raising a few eyebrows.
Recently, he’s been in the public eye after his four oldest children accused him of verbal and physical abuse, resulting in a wild sermon where he prayed God would “destroy” them.
During his sermon, he also said it was evil for wives to covertly record instances of their husband beating them or engaging in marital rape and passing that recording off to the police in order to get their spouse arrested.
Anderson has responded to some of the complaints on X, writing:

Its much wiser for young christian women to seek
help from the police dept if a husbands is beating them up For that is not treating them as Jesus treated his church . . Then for them to seek help from some guy or even a pastor or elder when she is in such a bad way at home .For obvious reasons of the flesh .
God put civil authorities in place so they would protect his people…. If a husband is beating his wifen up thats far from being Christian , So go to the police thats what they are for.
If she is truly in immediate danger, then she should call the police. (it’s ok for a woman to cry out – Deut. 22, etc.) And then if it is found that she falsely accused and just tried to use the police as her own personal enforcers, the church should discipline her. If she is not in immediate danger, then she should honor Matt. 18 and 1 Cor. 6 and first take the matter to the church. That’s what should be done, according to scripture.
But most churches don’t honor Matt. 18 and 1 Cor. 6. And I doubt Anderson’s “church” does either. It would mean members of the ekklēsia (Matt. 18) would have to be ready and willing to answer the call anytime day or night, and particularly the elders and deacons would essentially be on call all the time. But most these days ere lovers of pleasure and comfort rather than lovers of God (2 Tim. 3). So that is why the “church” isn’t honoring scripture and isn’t doing what the Lord tells it to do. It’s because the “church” these days is just as described in 2 Tim. 3.
One of the responses sort of cherry-picked part of 1 Cor. 6, omitting the fact that it explicitly says the church should resolve the matters. It does not say that matters should go unresolved. It says the opposite – that we should desire to resolve matters ourselves before it would ever have a need to go to the courts of Caesar, and that it is a disgrace when we don’t care enough to try.
So if their church is going to honor Matt. 18 and 1 Cor. 6, and essentially be on call to handle such matters at a moment’s notice, getting there as fast or faster than the police, then fine that’s great. But if not, then don’t cherry-pick the scriptures …
Ive heard Gods word preached for 77 and 1/2 years read my bible for over half centurary weve been married now since 1968. Its evil not to call the police if your husbands been beating you up. Life is hard enough with out some bully making you hate even living . you entered a marriage that was suppose to be loving see 1 corinthians 13 so you both could serve God cheerfuly .. A husband suppose to be Christ like .Who gave his life for unfaithful people . .Beating you up is abanding the true faith ! It realy does not matter what you even think you
