Kris Valloton is the co-founder of the School of the Prophets and Senior Associate Leader of Bethel Church.
No stranger to saying weird and wacky things, he’s previously taught that Adam Was ‘Procreating With God’ and ‘Co-Creating’ When He Named the Animals, that God made Adam ‘Male’ AND ‘Female’ + Adam’ co-created Eve.’ and that You are a little god.
He’s presently underfire for the way he and the church has been handling abuse, including Valloton himself blowing off and ghosting a victim of sexual abuse, and then keeping silent about it.
In a recent sermon, Vallotton explained that the reason God didn’t want man to create graven images of Him, as per Deuteronomy 4, is because an image of Him already exists, which is mankind.
He describes mankind as God-kind and has previously insisted that humans are little gods. He explains:
“You are not an evolutionized amoeba. You are not an evolutionized ape. You were made after the ‘God-kind.’ 10 times, God says, ‘after it’s kind, after it’s kind, after it’s kind, after it’s kind, after it’s kind, after it’s kind, after it’s kind,’ I didn’t count, somewhere around that, 10 times.
And then God says, ‘let us make man’- can I say- after the ‘God kind.’
You know, in Deuteronomy chapter 4, verse 15, God comes down from this mountain and he says to Moses,
“So watch yourselves carefully, since you did not see any form on the day the Lord spoke to you at Horeb from the midst of the fire, so that you do not act corruptly and make a graven image for yourselves in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female.”
God says, “when I came to you, Moses, tell the people, when I came to them, did you notice I came in the fire? In other words, I hid my image from them because I don’t want them to make a graven image after me. And the reason I don’t is because I already made an image after me. It’s called humans.”
God’s like, “don’t make a graven image after me. Listen, I already created someone in my image. I can’t have you making graven images, because I already made a person in my image. It’s called humans.”
This is some of that special theology we keep talking about.
