Op-Ed. Kevin DeYoung Was Just Elected Moderator of PCA General Assembly. This Is A Terrible Choice
On June 24, 2025, Rev. Kevin DeYoung was elected moderator of the Presbyterian Church in America’s (PCA) 52nd General Assembly in Dallas, Texas. The senior pastor of Christ Covenant Church in Matthews, North Carolina, and associate professor of systematic theology at Reformed Theological Seminary, DeYoung ran unopposed. As moderator, he will chair the General Assembly, guide discussions, and serve as the PCA’s public face for the coming year.
DeDoung was nominated by pastor Jason Helepolouys, who insisted that his nominee was a “true churchman” and that “In a time when clarity is rare, and conviction is costly, he has shown both- without partisanship, without pride, and without compromise. He holds fast to the Scriptures, loves the Reformed faith, and speaks the truth in love. And through it all, he carries himself as a servant of Christ.”
We strongly disagree.
One example demonstrating why DeYoung is unqualified is the way he chastised Timothy Brindle for kindly and graciously bringing up concerns about Irwyn Ince and his race-based gatherings. DeYoung interrupted him and said that he lacked decorum and was being intemperate, when nothing could be further from the truth.
Along with being a soft-spoken pastor and professor, DeYoung is a prolific author and speaker who has spent more than a decade serving and supporting The Gospel Coalition, which also hosted his blog.
Although no longer as actively publishing there, DeYoung is a long-term council member—a primary stakeholder who provides leadership and vision for the work of the Coalition.
To our knowledge, DeYoung has never publicly addressed or challenged TGC’s theological drift, nor has he spoken up or out regarding the institution’s rot and progressive ideologies that have infiltrated his organization, remaining silent as they churned out one terrible post after another.
