Canadian Judge Blocks 27 y/o Woman’s Bid To Euthanize Herself for Having Autism

Weeks after a Canadian judge ruled that a 27 y/o woman could kill herself through Canada’s Medical Assistance in Death (MAID) program because she has autism, another judge stepped forward, issuing a stay until the case can be reviewed further.

The woman, who cannot be named due to a publication plan (known only as MV), cannot take part in MAID (government-funded lethal injection) anymore until a court of appeals reviews her case, which is set for October 2024. Up to this point, her father has fought vigorously against her plans, arguing that she is a vulnerable person and still lives with them, as well as pointing out that her only ailment is her autism, which should not qualify because she is not terminally ill. According to reports:

Court documents revealed that MV did not contest her father’s claims or provide details about her medical condition, symptoms, or suffering beyond being approved for MAID by two doctors.

MV asserted that her father had no authority to challenge her private medical decisions or the clinical judgment of her doctors. She argued that her decision to pursue MAID was personal, private, and not subject to court review, emphasizing her autonomy and right to die with dignity.

Canada is one of only seven countries in the world where euthanasia is permitted, and in just a few short years, it has become arguably the most permissive of all. Legalized in 2016, deaths from euthanasia have increased year over year, growing between 30-36% each time, and now represent more than 5.1% of all deaths.

In the province of Quebec, where it is more prominent still, nearly 8% of all deaths are state-sanctioned, making in the top three causes of death only behind heart disease and cancer.

  1. I’m just taking the slow route to eternity by not exercising and eating everything in sight.
