Grace Community Church’s Phil Johnson Gives Promising Health Update After Suffering Pulmonary Embolism

The estimable Phil Johnson, Executive Director of Grace to You, founder and former curator of The Spurgeon Archive, and one of our favorite people ever, has been afflicted with a health scare these past few days after waking up and suffering a pulmonary embolism early Friday morning.

A pulmonary embolism is incredibly serious and develops when a blood clot constricts and stops blood flow to an artery in the lung, resulting in chest pains, shortness of breath, and symptoms like a heart attack. According to the National Library of Medicine:

If untreated, acute PE is associated with a significant mortality rate (as high as 30%), whereas the death rate of diagnosed and treated PE is 8%. Up to 10% of acute PE patients die suddenly. Two of three patients succumbing to PE die within 2 h after presentation

He followed it up the next day with the revelation of dialysis treatment, which is where you hook yourself up to a machine that help your body remove toxins, waste products, and extra fluid from your blood when your kidneys are unable to, either temporarily or permanently. Basically, a mechanical kidney.

Thankfully, as part of his treatment, Phil received a permanent dialysis port, making the job easier while his kidneys hopefully regain their use.

Keep the brother in your prayers.
