Hillsong Church is hemorrhaging money like crazy, down an estimated $5M a year in tithes and donations, continuing the fallout from years of scandals, controversies, and all-around bad behavior.
Two years ago, a leak of 17,000 financial documents from Hillsong Church that revealed the darling of the evangelical world were spending money like drunken pirates, from $3591.07 at the Cataline restaurant to $23,256 for a night stay at the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel hotel, people were not impressed. These revelations torched their reputation and caused mass defections. It also caused the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) to begin investigating them for fraud, financial mismanagement, and hiding and underreporting assets. These regulatory investigations have forced Hillsong to hand over even further documents, with church officials complaining that these audits and investigations put them at continued financial risk. According to the Herald Sun:
Hillsong handed over a string of financial documents to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) last week, revealing its plunging fortunes.
Documents warned that a key Hillsong entity, The Hillsong Foundation Trust, was racing to refinance a $24 million loan with NAB before September 30 this year.
Donations at that charity had dropped $5 million in a year – or almost $100,000 per week.
The church is also engaged in several lawsuits over mismanagement of sexual abuse, including one with Anna Crenshaw that looks like it will go to trial, and will likely cost them millions.
To all this we say “good!” Hillsong has shown to be a blight on the church. both in theology and influence, and we would love for nothing more than they all become insolvent, implode, and shut down forever.
