NAMB Pres. Kevin Ezell Loses $10,000 Bet Over Finding NAMB/SEND Church Plant With Female Pastor
Kevin Ezell, the President of the North American Mission Board, the church planting arm of the Southern Baptist Convention that would rather burn down than provide trustees fiscal accountability over its dealings, pledged that he’d give anyone $10,000 to anyone who could find a NAMB/ SEND church plant with a single female pastor, and was quickly taken to task after an SBC pastor found one with four.
In the latest Baptist Review podcast episode, Kevin Ezell says:
Q: Shifting gears a little bit, but keeping things on the convention. The Law Amendment failed last year narrowly and we know it’s going to be presented again in Dallas. It looks like in the exact same language. I’m wondering what are your thoughts on the passage of a Law Amendment, especially in light of maybe some decisions with the credentials committee.
And one of the reasons people say that we need that is because we have North American Mission Board plants that have female pastors, co-pastors, shared leadership. Your chance to address that with those folks.
Ezell: Yeah. Yeah. Look, I’d give anybody $10,000 if they can find one, alright? There’s not, there’s, there’s just not there. It’s just so ridiculous, you know? And again, naive.
And I just think, honestly, I just don’t think it’s helpful. We got bigger, in my mind, we just got bigger problems. I just don’t think this is -look, we’ve got thousands upon thousands of churches that baptize no one. And this is the biggest? Anytime you say something like that, people are gonna say, “hey, he’s theologically compromised.’ Not at all! I’m kist like- we’ve got issues: that’s not one of the major ones, but you know, they’re gonna, whether it passes or not, it really doesn’t have any impact on NAMB because our policies and guidelines are stricter than that.
The challenge was quickly taken up by pastor Nate Schlomann, who found one within 10 minutes.
He lists The Hills Novato Church, which is listed as a current NAMB / SEND Church plant, and which has four women pastors on staff, adding “(this is in clear violation of our shared doctrinal commitments. Any Southern Baptist should now agree that we need the Law Amendment, and that there are in fact NAMB churches with female pastors.”
Notably, Kevin Ezell and the lead pastor of Clovis Hills, Shawn Beaty, taught together at an On-Target Evangelism Conference, sponsored by NAMB.
We reached out to Ezell and asked whether he’d pay up, and he has not responded since publication.
In 2021, Ezell came under similar fire after discovering that their Flordia church plant, 1Name Church, had a lead female pastor. At the time Ezell simply ignored the critique. This didn’t just happen once, but twice.
