Dr. Wilman was born in 1938 and became an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church, where he pastored for over a decade. By the late 1970s, he became increasingly troubled by the profanity and gross indecency he saw on TV, deciding to leave the pastorate and found the American Family Association and later American Family Radio (AFR), which became pioneers in the pro-family movement. The AFA now boasts two million listeners and an email list of over three million.

Responding of his death, Dr. Robert Jeffress, senior pastor of First Baptist Dallas whose radio program airs on AFR, shared:
“Don Wildmon was a true pioneer in encouraging pastors like myself and thousands of others to speak out on the great moral issues of the day. He will be sorely missed by a country that needs him more than ever right now. We pray for the Wildmon family, and wish them every encouragement from Heaven that they will see Don again in Heaven, with all of the rewards he deserves.”
