Catholic University Students Seek To Ban Pro-Israel Groups From Campus
The Catholic University of America is a private Catholic research university in Washington, DC, enrolling 5,000 students and boasting a yearly endowment of more than a quarter of a billion dollars.
According to their “about page,” they are “unique among universities in the United States — even among Catholic universities” because they are “founded and sponsored by the bishops of the country with the approval of the Holy See” and are “committed to being a comprehensive Catholic and American institution of higher learning, faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ as handed on by the Church.”
Despite this pedigree, they have been ideologically captured, with the school’s Student Government Association (SGA) Senate recently proposing a resolution that would ban any student group on campus that supports Israel, according to a recent story in the Christian Post.
Earlier this week, the SGA debated “Resolution 004: A Resolution to Advocate For A Ban on Clubs in Support of a Nation(s) Commissioning a Genocide,” which says “Supporting a Nation or organization that is actively pursuing inexcusable evil, such as genocide or terrorism, acts in a way that is contrary to the faith of the Catholic Church.”
Felipe Avila, president of the school’s Students Supporting Israel (SSI), told The Christian Post:
“The administration’s failure to act created a vacuum, which is now being filled by students who feel empowered to push bigoted legislation built on outright deception…This deceptive measure is a profound betrayal of our Catholic intellectual tradition. Our university is built on the pursuit of truth, not the suppression of it. This resolution is an admission of intellectual defeat, a sign that its arguments are too weak for open debate and must be shielded by an outright ban. More speech, not less, is the answer.”
The week before, the SSI hosted a Q&A with two Israeli Defense Forces soldiers who discussed their time in Gaza. The event drew more than 50 protesters, including Joshua Ortiz, co-sponsor of Resolution 004, who declared “The university should not be complicit with genocide. If our Lord was born today, He would be a corpse under the rubble.”
