Russell Moore Steps Down as Editor in Chief of Christianity Today, Replacement Named
Russell Moore has stepped down from his position as editor-in-chief of Christianity Today, with senior news editor Marvin Olasky taking his place, according to a press release issued by the company.
Olasky was editor in chief at World magazine from 1994 to 2021. He served as a professor at The University of Texas at Austin from 1983 to 2008. Olasky is the author of 30 books on journalism, American history, abortion, and public policy, including The Tragedy of American Compassion, Prodigal Press, and Compassionate Conservatism.
He has served the past 18 months at Christianity Today, first as a consultant and then as an executive editor.
Moore previously revealed in his newsletter that while he initially agreed to take over the responsibilities of editor-in-chief for a period of time, he has become so busy with his own podcast and projects. Consequently, he was overjoyed when Olasly joined the CT team and then ultimately agreed to take over as editor-in-chief, with Moore assuming the roles of columnist and editor at large.
I finally convinced Marvin to take the EIC parts of this role so I can expand all this writing and speaking without collapsing. I was able to sell it to the powers-that-be at CT by noting that they could get the best of both of us if they let me have it this way.
It took a while (over a year and a half), but I was persistent, and they are now allowing me to hand the day-to-day to someone who has proven he can not only do it but can change the world (no pun intended) as he does.
Moore further adds:
The only thing that will change is that I will have the time and space to “create content” (to use a phrase I hate). That means that I will be able to write to you every week without wondering every Tuesday whether it is going to get done in time to send it, and we’ll be able, finally, to expand out the podcast offerings in ways some of you have been asking to happen. Jiminy Cricket is on my shoulder telling me not to give away some surprises that I’m excited to show you, since I don’t yet have permission to unveil them, so I will listen to him.
Ultimately, however, we don’t expect Christianity today to become any less progressive, and we expect Olasky’s tenure to echo Moore’s, given the progressive trajectory he has been on for the last half-decade.

Before a single Executive Order on illegal immigration came down, Christianity Today’s executive news editor, Marvin Olasky, had already put out a call for emotionally loaded sad stories regarding deportees. As you can see in the email he sent out, they never intended to provide any other kind of coverage.
