‘Eco-Christian Activists’ Arrested After Scaling Cathedral With ‘Anti-Fossil Fuel’ Banner

Christian Climate Action is a ragtag group of non-violent activists who visit churches across the UK and plead with them to divest from fossil fuels.

They describe themselves “Christians supporting each other to take meaningful action in the face of imminent and catastrophic anthropogenic climate breakdown” who, “inspired by the Holy Spirit,” carry out acts of “public witness, non-violent direct action and civil disobedience to urge those in power to make the changes needed.”

Mostly they harangue the Church of England to “rid itself of all investments that finance the fossil fuel industry and its sadly destructive activities and instead make investments that will safeguard the environment.” This despite the fact that the former Archbishop of Canterbury pledged to make the denomination net zero carbon emissions by 2030.

We last wrote about them after one of their members attended a service at Southwark Cathedral and staged a public head-shaving inside a church as “a sign of penitence’ that they too have been “complicit in causing the crisis,” as an “act of repentance for the role both individuals & the church are playing in fueling the climate emergency.”

The group, which seems primarily comprised of senior citizens and late 50-somethings, has been on a tear recently, after launching their new mantra ‘Don’t Crucify Creation,’ which sees them visiting multiple churches in protest.

Last week, four members climbed Bath Alley Tower, where they flew their flag. Refusing to come down, the police and fire services were called, and they were ultimately arrested.

According to Premier News, Church of England member, David, 64, said he felt unable to “stand by.”

“I am acting on behalf of my children and grandchildren. I am here to call on the Church to get back to its roots. Jesus continually spoke out against the injustices of the rulers and leaders of his time… Our government and the fossil fuel industry are selfishly pursuing short term profits, putting the lives of millions at risk and crucifying God’s creation. The Church must find the courage to step outside of its ancient buildings, and act in obedience to God’s calling.”
