Church Employee Facing Peeping Tom Charges, Possessing CSAM, After Spying on Girls’ Change Room
A 47-year-old former employee of River Oaks Presbyterian Church, Kurt Schmitz, faces multiple counts of voyeurism involving electronic devices and possession of child sexual abuse material, according to court documents, after allegedly recording young girls undressing during a church event.
The investigation began in February 2025 when church officials contacted police after Schmitz reportedly admitted to viewing security footage of a girl changing clothes during a church clothing sale fundraiser. The event involved girls trying on dresses in classrooms designated as changing areas, which were equipped with security cameras.
According to News on 6, Schmitz told police:
-He said he knew about the event and that classrooms were going to be used for changing and his initial intention was to disable the cameras through the security app, but he saw a girl trying on dresses.
-He said he felt bad, so he deleted the app off his phone and couldn’t re-download it onto his phone without his wife’s permission because she has a monitoring app installed on his phone.
-So, he went to the church and utilized a tablet and re-installed the security camera app and saw footage of additional girls changing and switched over to the live feed and watched them change, in real time.
-It says there were 29 video files that showed 6 different girls.
-13 files were viewed on February 12, 2025 and 10 files were viewed on February 14, 2025.
Schmitz’s wife discovered the images on his tablet and threatened to divorce him if he didn’t turn himself in to the police.
-He told police, he has an addiction to pornography and to avoid the monitoring app on his phone, he buys a tablet, watches pornography on it, then, gets mad at himself and gets rid of the tablet, then temptation hits and he buys another tablet and the cycle continues.
Despite Schmitz’s claim that a search of his devices would only uncover adult pornography, he was charged of possessing child sexual abuse material.
Pastor Ricky Jones of River Oaks Presbyterian Church expressed his dismay, saying in a statement, “We are all very upset by the actions of our employee and reacted immediately. This behavior is terrible in every way and it’s inconsistent with what we believe and inconsistent with the law and we have cooperated with law enforcement with everything they asked us to do and we have informed everyone who was directly involved as soon as we found out and we are doing everything in our power to address this matter.”
