A Florida pastor who divorced his wife was dismayed to discover that she had stolen nearly $200,000 from the church, as revealed by an investigation following the dissolution of their marriage.
Lloyd Bertine is the senior pastor of Gulf to Lake Baptist Church, a Southern Baptist church in Crystal River, FL. Earlier this year, he divorced his wife, Nancy Bertine, 74, after discovering she had been having an affair. Nancy was also employed by the church as their worship team ministry leader and was involved in overseeing their finances. After discovering her marital infidelities, she was fired.
In the aftermath of her termination, church employees reviewed her computer and found an Amazon shopping list linked to the church’s credit card, where they discovered she had made more than 1,000 purchases over a three-year period, between 2021 and 2024, including clothing, cosmetics, personal items, and even dog food, all without the church’s approval or leadership’s knowledge.
In an affidavit, deputies wrote that Bertine insisted she was a “God-fearing woman” and never meant to take anything that wasn’t hers. They noted, “The suspect advised that she was willing to pay back any money that she ‘might have accidentally used’ and wanted to make this whole situation right.”
According to Senior Pastor Lloyd Bertine, his ex-wife has money from selling the house following their divorce and has pledged to repay everything.
