The Cathedral of Hope in Dallas, Texas, is a United Church of Christ congregation that claims over 3800 members and is believed to be the country’s largest church that predominantly comprises lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender congregants.
It is also one of the largest UCC congregations in the world. In fact, the church is so progressive and theologically transgressive that they created a 225-seat Interfaith Peace Chapel on site, which they tout as an “example of inclusive spiritual cooperation for the rest of the world.”
Yesterday, they hosted a Drag Brunch following their “Drag Sunday Service.” The former event featured “captivating performances by talented drag artists in a fun and inclusive space,” which was “the perfect way to continue the celebration, connect with the community, and support the mission of Cathedral of Hope.”
Tellingly, this church event was also 18+ event and not safe for minors.

In a covert video of the event taken by the Texas Family project, we see one of the drag performers threatening to violence on conservatives by threatening to kill anyone who voted for President Trump.

For their drag church service, however, things were a bit more benign. Keeping with the theme, they invited ‘Drag King’ “Rev. Brock Bottom” to preach.

Brock Bottom’s real name is Brooke Doley. She’s a biological female (the only kind) who uses He/They pronouns. She’s been performing as a “drag king” for the last decade and is lauded as one who “enjoys blatantly ignoring gender norms in favor of an uninhibited, playful expression of being that combines queer history, pop culture, tear-away pants and, at times, religion.”
In her message, she describes her experiences that led her to become a drag queen, bemoaning being raised in a church that was “saturated in early 2000’s evangelical purity culture.” Now, however, she insists that gender is little more than a “social construct” that is “fragile and arbitrarily constructed” to enforce “power dynamics.”
At the Cathedral of Hope's recent Sunday morning drag service, the impastor explains that Jesus saying "with God all things are possible" in Mark 10 includes a preacher being a "drag king" who performs as "Brock Bottom."
