Kid Rock has released the first single from his upcoming album Halfway to Jesus, explaining that it comes from being more vocal about his faith, but that he is still “Kid Motherf****** Rock.”
Rock, whose real name is Robert Ritchie and whose ‘pastor’ is Paua White, says he woke up at 2:00 in the morning and wrote the song in about 30 minutes. In an August interview, he explained:
It’s kind of the spiritual journey I’ve been on and I’ve had a calling through James 1:17, my middle name being James and 1/17 my birthday. And I looked up that passage a while back and it’s all good things basically come from God.
(Ed. Note. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. ESV)
Notably, the music video features a scene in which a nicely dressed woman takes off her shirt to reveal a more revealing top underneath. A Jesus character then turns a pitcher of beer into water and pours it over her head, “baptizing” her in it.
A sample of the lyrics include:
I’ve been locked up in your cages
And my sins became contagious
But when I got right with Jesus Christ
I found things that money can’t buyOh, Jesus is king
And for his glory, I will sing
So, pray for my salvation and to do the righteous thing
Baptize me in the water
Give glory to our father
Let freedom ring
Spread your wings
Jesus is king
The cover art for the new album sees it containing explicit content, and the track listing includes a song called “7 Sins” with Eminem, along with songs titled “Why Don’t You Look Into Jesus,” “I Don’t Drink the Whiskey Anymore,” “Me and Jesus,” and “God Is Good.”
