Popular Christian band MercyMe received more than $17 million for promoting child sponsorship organizations over a seven-year period, according to court filings cited in a recent article by The Roys Report.
Newsboys owner Wes Campbell is currently embroiled in a lawsuit he launched against 33 parties in light of the fallout from accusations against former Newsboys lead singer Michael Tait. Campbell says the controversy led to lost business and lasting damage to his reputation.
In the lawsuit, Campbell accuses MercyMe of seeking to dismantle his company, Thriving Children Advocates (TCA). The company describes itself as a “professional fundraising organization that assists artists, speakers, authors and all others who have a passion for helping poor and needy children by speaking on behalf of humanitarian aid organizations.”
The arrangement at the center of the dispute was straightforward. Children International wanted to increase child sponsorships and signed a deal with TCA to help make that happen. It is not publicly known how much Children International paid TCA. TCA then enlisted artists it worked with to promote the sponsorships and provided MercyMe with a $1 million advance.
In 2019, MercyMe signed an agreement with TCA to promote child sponsorship at their concerts, with the goal of converting 6% of attendees. Concertgoers could sponsor a child for $39 a month, and MercyMe in turn would receive $230 for each confirmed sponsor.
Under the deal, MercyMe would be paid $1 million a year in advance in exchange for securing 22,500 sponsorships.
At $230 per sponsor, that target would have generated $5,175,000. If MercyMe hit the full goal, they would clear more than $4 million beyond the advance under the original terms.
According to the lawsuit, MercyMe was successful in promoting the sponsorships, ultimately received a total of $17 million over the term of their contract.
That relationship later collapsed, however, after stories came out about Michael Tait’s misconduct while connected to the Newsboys.
MercyMe terminated its contract with TCA and instead signed with LiveCo/TPR, which prompted Wes Campbell and TCA to sue.

Hoo boy, now that’s a lot of greed, deception, manipulation and ” … imagining that godliness is a means of gain …” (1 Tim. 6:5). Perverting the Gospel into nothing but a fraudulent swindle and scam.
There’s no such thing as for-profit charity. But they convince themselves otherwise and tell themselves they’re doing something good when they are not. They get the first six months of “sponsorship” money. The next wolf gets the next six months. By the time they all pay themselves first, it’s probably several years before the child receives a dime’s worth of help at all. And not many such “sponsorships” last that long.
Pay attention to Matt. 15:1-10, 1 Tim. 5 and 6, ordo amoris. If you want to find a child in need, you can find one nearby. Do that instead and help directly as the Lord leads. And let the church in those other countries do the same. It’s their responsibility and obligation to the Lord, so don’t deprive them of it. When done this way, as scripture instructs, there is a lot less room for wickedness to creep in, and a lot more chance those in need will actually receive the help they need.

His platform emphasizes minimizing U.S. diplomatic pressure on allied nations regarding their internal defense decisions, provided those actions do not draw American forces into broader military conflicts.
Ramaswamy consistently criticizes international governing bodies, including the United Nations, human rights commissions, and international legal institutions. He would likely dismiss warnings or resolutions issued by international courts or the UN regarding violations of international law (such as the Fourth Geneva Convention) as overreach by globalist institutions, keeping American diplomatic machinery clear of international enforcement efforts.
Ramaswamy’s economic doctrine strongly opposes foreign aid expenditures. As such, he would oppose using American taxpayer dollars to fund the infrastructure, transportation, or long-term resettlement costs associated with moving civilian populations into neighboring regions. The part that makes no sense at all is that they’re being paid almost six times more than the cost of a sponsorship for each successful sponsorship they produce. Why not just skip the middle man and sponsor 5-6 kids with the money that would be paid to the band?
