A Nigerian woman has recently completed reading the entire Bible continuously for 144 hours, in a bid for a world record.
Habibat Salawudeen Ihiovi-Jack, 27, who attends Summit Bible Church in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, began in the book of Genesis on June 22 and completed the last chapter of Revelation on June 29, in an event that was heavily promoted by the church, both before and after.
In line with Guinness guidelines, anyone attempting a continuous reading must “read aloud continuously from published works, with no more than a 30-second pause between items being read.”
Participants are allowed 5 minutes of rest for every hour read, which can be banked to take longer breaks to eat, drink, receive medical check-ins, and even catch a few minutes of sleep. This is the same formula that SBC pastor Matthew Olson used when he preached his 96 hour sermon.
While at times Ihiovi-Jack looked like she could barely put words together, as seen in this unlisted live video, in the end she completed the feat, energized.
Her pastor, Dr. Andy Osakwe, said of his congregant:
While this is a Guinness World Records attempt, its purpose goes far beyond setting a record. It is a sincere effort to exalt God’s Word, inspire a renewed passion for Scripture, and encourage deeper engagement with the truth of the Bible.
This initiative serves as a reminder that the Bible remains God’s living and transformative message to humanity.
In 2018, more than 150 members of the Danville faith community in Virginia, taking turns, read the entire bible in 76 hours.
