Angel Studios, the Mormon-owned streaming platform and film distributor best known for producing The Chosen and Sound of Freedom, has announced a sequel to their recent film Young Washington after it opened to more than $19 million at the box office, proving to be a smash success.
Angel Studios has generated several successes at the box office. Previous theatrical releases include His Only Son ($13.8 million on a $250,000 budget), Solo Mio ($26 million on a $4 million budget), and their mega-hit Sound of Freedom ($250 million on a $14.5 million budget).
However, many of their films did not fare as well. These include Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot ($12 million on an $8.5 million budget), the 2024 film Cabrini ($20 million on a $50 million budget), Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Spy, Assassin ($12 million on a $25 million budget), and most recently Animal Farm ($6.2 million on a $35 million budget).
Over the last five days, Young Washington, which was released on July 3 and holds a 61% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 92% from regular filmgoers, has grossed nearly $25 million on a $20 million budget. It is expected to have some “legs” over the next few weeks.
As a result of the success, director and co-writer Jon Erwin announced on social media that a Revolutionary War follow-up, 1776, is already in the works.
