Earlier this week, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) 227th General Assembly Constitutional Interpretation Committee, by a vote of 45-12, sent the contentious CON-10 to the Advisory Committee on Social Witness Policy (ACSWP) for further review, keeping it alive but ensuring that it won’t be brought up against until the next General Assembly.

To be clear, the committee did not vote for or against a proposal recommending monogamy. The committee, given the advice of parliamentary and constitutional authorities within the church, deemed the overture – as written – not acceptable for the action it requested. Still, several committee members recognized the concerns represented by the authors and those who spoke in favor of the overture. The group ultimately referred the overture’s contents to the larger theological study on families.
The rule, submitted by the Sierra Blanca Presbytery, states that PC(USA) pastors must “display moral character” and, “if engaged in any relationship of a sexual nature, living in a monogamous one.” The proposal was written by Presbyterians for the Kingdom, the non-profit from @redeemed_zoomer.
Naturally, this has caught the attention of many progressive, who are outraged at the very idea that clergy might have to be monogamous. Case in point:
Given that this is such a perfect wedge issue that forces progressive Presbyterians to take sides, exposing the depths of their depravity, we don’t expect it to go away anytime soon.
