SBC President Clint Pressley Endorses Bill Allowing Death Penalty for Abortion

Southern Baptist Convention president Clint Pressley has publicly lent his support to proposed legislation in Tennessee that, if passed, would make it the most anti-abortion state in the country- even allowing for the death penalty for any woman who murders her baby via abortion. He shared on X:

“I am glad to support HB 570 and SB 738, two bills in the Tennessee legislature that would protect every preborn child in Tennessee from abortion by providing preborn children with equal protection of the laws. By protecting the lives of preborn children with the same laws that protect people who are born, we are simply loving our neighbors in the womb as ourselves.”

Tennessee now has the opportunity to set an example of how states can protect the sanctity of human life from conception to natural death. I am urging the Tennessee legislature to move these bills forward this legislative session. It’s both pro-life and consistent!”

According to the Foundation to Abolish Abortion, House Bill 570 and Senate Bill 738 would abolish abortion in Tennessee by establishing equal protection of the laws for preborn babies.

This is the first equal protection legislation ever filed in Tennessee and would become the strongest anti-abortion legislation in state history if passed into law.

The legislation recognizes that “innocent human life, created in the image of God, should be equally protected under the laws from fertilization to natural death.” House Bill 570 and Senate Bill 738 require that all preborn babies are “protected with the same criminal and civil laws protecting the lives of born persons by repealing provisions that permit prenatal homicide and assault.”

Under this legislation, murdering anyone would be made illegal for everyone, ensuring that all humans made in the image of God are equally protected in accordance with the Tennessee Constitution, the United States Constitution, and the Law of God.

The endorsement from Pressley, along with being wonderful news that we wholeheartedly support, is unprecedented and a far cry from his presidential predecessors, who would never have co-signed such a measure.

However, this endorsement puts him directly at odds with the Convention’s lobbying arm, the ERLC, which has publicly and battled against this type of legislation, and has repeatedly insisted they will NEVER support any bill that punishes a mother in any way for the murder of their child.

As the preeminent abortion abolition organization Abolitionist Rising points out, this is not a pro-life bill, and organizations like the ERLC will work overtime to ensure it never sees the light of day.
