Lutheran Pastor Blasts Jesus for His Treatment of Martha in Luke 10, Says Jesus was Wrong and ‘Needed to be Corrected’

Advent Lutheran Church in Madison is an inclusive ELCA congregation led by the Rev Nick Utphall. One of their most unique features is that they are in an ecumenical partnership with Community of Hope UCC, where they “own the church building together, have a typical budget, share in the education programs for all ages, fellowship events, youth ministry and worship together throughout the year,” all the while having their own distinct church life. Naturally, they are both progressive as they come.

In a recent sermon, Utphall goes off on Jesus and the writer Luke for their treatment of Mary and Martha in Luke Chapter 10, accusing them of trying to minimize her role and keep her from serving in the church.
First, he notes that they intentionally reversed the scripture reading, reading Numbers 27:1-10 in the New testament portion and Luke 10 in the Old Testament reading, because the former is good news and the latter is not. (Numbers 27 is where the five daughters of Zelophehad, following his death, beseech Moses to give his property to them as an inheritance, given that he had no sons. Moses asks the Lord, and the Lord agrees.)
Then, Utphall offers that this may be a case of Luke falsely attributing quotes to Jesus.
If you already didn’t like Luke, hearing implicit criticism of housework, of domestic labor, of what still is way too often known as ‘a woman’s place’, then let me go ahead and make it worse and say that this may actually be trying further to diminish women’s roles. It comes from the mouth of Jesus and I really hope that it was the writer Luke who just put it on Jesus lips.
Ultimately, Utphall accuses Luke and Jesus of trying to silence and minimize Mary, while insisting:
Jesus needed to have his world view and the purview of his goodness expanded…Jesus needed to learn his lesson and stand corrected.”
Note. Same church as shared this trans-affirming poem.
2 Corinthians 11:13-15
To be a Christian, a person is required to believe that Jesus is God Incarnate.
Clearly, this pastor does not hold that belief.
Therefore, this pastor is not a Christian.
Therefore, I don’t give a rip what he thinks…about anything
What Jesus said about the Jews is 100% correct.
They are of their father the devil.
They are not of God.
They are not of his flock.
They are serpents and vipers.
They are the synagogue of Satan.
Jesus did not say that all Jews are those things, liar. YOU did. Jesus was specifically addressing ONE particular subset, and you know that, liar. And your attempt to put that sick, false claim in His mouth is unacceptable, you anti-Semitic sicko. Your hatred is NOT an argument for that vile, filthy ideology.
You are correct. This person has been identified as a compulsive Jew hater – devoting a lot of time posting crap like this across the net, making things up, blaming everything from measles to tsunamis on Jews. Name-calling and insulting people who expose his BS.
Scared little Jew.
If any Jew were good he would dis-identify from being a Jew and make himself a Gentile.
Yeah, sorry, hook nose, but the Pharisees of Jesus’ day are the “Jews” of today. Everyone knows it, and you can’t hide from that fact.
You will burn in hell, ya Atheists POS, You get around the ole cyber world with always the same scat.
At this point in Christian history, we don’t even NEED the world as an enemy; we are showing that we’re perfectly capable of destroying the church on our own. Never was a claim more true than the one which says in Her first century, the Church’s main enemies were external, and it Her second century, the Church’s main enemies were INTERNAL. Only a Judas could betray the Christ. Only insiders can do so much damage to the Body of Christ. Tragic.

That subset is all of them who are not the apostles.
That pastor is making something out of nothing. Luke 10 is a simple passage – Martha’s sister Mary was listening to Jesus preach, while Martha was making preparations for the visit. Martha asks Jesus to tell Mary to help. Jesus tells her that not a lot of prep is needed, and that Mary is doing something more important. It didn’t even fall into the category of a mild rebuke. End of story.
Think about what the Lutheran dude said…
If He was wrong in any statement He made, He from that moment on, would have been rendered ineligible as the Lamb of God and would not have been resurrected from the dead… Much less leading the captives who believed, out of Hell.
The dude is a heretic…
Goodbye heretic.
The ELCA has lost about 50% of its members in less than 30 years. At the rate things are going, it’ll be as dead as the Shakers by mid-century. Gee, I wonder why?
Physiogamy on that guy says Jew.
Titus 1:10-16 “For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group.” (You don’t say, Paul?) “They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain. One of Crete’s own poets has said it: ‘Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.’ This saying is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith and will pay no attention to Jewish myths” (What kind of myths???) “or to the merely human commands of those who reject the truth. To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted. They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.”
This witness is true not only of Cretan, but also of Lutherans.
He’s certainly not a Missouri Synod Lutheran. He probably also pushes queers and is himself a homosexual. I’m just guessing, but that’s the pattern.
The ELCA went down to the toilet in the 1990’s already with their “Re-imagining God Conferences”. Immorality among the clergy was rampant. Now DOGE’s discoveries makes me wonder if the US Government leftists were behind scenes of the disaster.
If Jesus was wrong and needed to be corrected, THEH He, Jesus wasn’t the perfect sacrifice and the good pastor is still in his sin and is lost. Tsk, Tsk
