Church Puts On Deadpool & Wolverine-Themed Church Service?
RiverLife Church is a member of the North Central District of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. A 300-member multisite led by lead pastor Greg Rhodes, they are a predominantly Hmong Church, whereby 80% of the congregants comprise pf the China-based Hmong people.
Three months ago, they put on their At The Movies series, where they exegete summer blockbusters. This year’s offerings included Dune 2, Godzilla x Kong, Inside Out 2, and the R-rated Dealpool & Wolverine, which pastor Rhodes explains is so “extremely violent and very vulgar” that “I couldn’t even find a trailer that I could play in church, so you’re just gonna have to imagine it.”
As far as the sermon goes, Rhodes, who has clearly seen the film, offers that he’s not encouraging his flock to go see it, as “I’ll leave that up to your discretion,” but describes it as a “buddy-cop” film where you “take two mismatched people, put them together, and hilarity ensues.” He notes:
We actually wish what happens with their conflicts can happen with our conflicts. Because we work with people we don’t like. We have personality conflicts, maybe even in our own family. We have tensions and disagreements. And I think somewhere deep in us, we love these stories, because we wish that the outcome in our life could be like the outcome on the screen. We wish that we could be like them instead of like ourselves.
To that end, he preaches a sermon on David and King Saul, comparing their circumstances to Deadpool and Wolverine, the hijinks that the kings of Israel were up to, and the conflict between them.
Why not just choose a cleaner movie? He could have used Rey Star Wars and compared Rey to Esther or something.
