Texas Only Saw 62 Surgical Abortions in 2023, Down From 50,783 Two Years Earlier
The Texas Health and Human Services Commission finalized their numbers for surgical abortions in the state in 2023, showing the impact of the overturning of Roe v Wade on the state by recording a reduction of 99.88% compared to two years earlier.
In Texas, which has a population of over 30 million people, child murder statistics leading up to the Supreme Court decision were monstrously common.
In 2021, there were 50,782 surgical abortions.
In 2022, which saw Roe v Wade overturned and anti-abortion trigger laws go into effect, there were 17,194 in the first seven months and then only 18 in the next five
in 2023, there were only 62 surgical abortions in the state.
.According to reporting, all of the 62 but was considered medically necessary to preserve the mother’s life, which Texas law allows.
While we don’t know the exact nature of these circumstances, one of the most common medical interventions would be in cases of ectopic pregnancy, where the fertilized eggs implant in the fallopian tubes rather than the womb. To save the life of the mother, indirect action is taken, which results in the loss of a pregnancy, but which should not be considered the murder of a baby but rather more akin to a miscarriage.
While the drastic reduction of abortion sounds like an unmitigated success, these numbers are very deceptive. While surgical abortions are down, out-of-state abortion clinics are only a couple hundred miles away from their more prominent cities. Furthermore, Texans have access to all the emergency contraception and abortifacient pills they want. Through the Affordable Care Act, most government-funded programs and health insurance cover Plan B.
Similarly, along with 150 Title X Clinics across the state helping to provide emergency contraceptives, groups like the Healthy Woman Program receive massive funding, in turn providing free abortive contraceptives to low-income residents between the ages of 15 and 44. Similarly, the Family Planning Program does likewise with higher thresholds for ages and income, including services for illegal immigrants.
Groups in Texas like Jane’s Due Process, Big Bend Reproductive Coalition, South Texans for Reproductive Justice, and Black Book Sex Ed, among others, will drop off and deliver free plan B within 24-48 hours,
Last of all, abortion pills like Plan B are available over the counter in many stores and online and can be purchased by anybody for as little as $6.85 a pill.
Surgical abortions make be illegal in Texas but if you want to murder your baby in the state, one way or another, you’re more than welcome to.
