Barna Report: There’s Less Evangelicals Than Previously Believed, and Way More of Them Are Heretics

There are far fewer Evangelicals in America than previously thought, according to a new report by The Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University. Based on a survey conducted with 2000 Americans by theAmerican Worldview Inventory, they note that “Evangelicals are far fewer in number than typically reported, often are far less biblical in their thinking than one might think, and tend to vote in far fewer numbers than expected.”

Defining evangelicals as “people who recognize their sinful life, rely upon Jesus Christ for their redemption, and receive practical life guidance and wisdom from the Bible in their quest to live under the lordship of Jesus” (borrowing NAE’s definition) and those who “take the Bible seriously and believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord,” Barna researchers concluded that previous statistics claiming between 25-40% of Americans adults are evangelical are misleading and “suspect.”

In actuality it’s closer to 10%.

This is because most of the stats come from people who self-report and identify as evangelicals, even if they do not meet the aforementioned criteria. Therefore, it is necessary to categorize them differently as theological evangelicals vs. folks attending evangelical churches.

Barna also observed that while most theological evangelicals had near unanimous beliefs in several critical categories (pink), they also had some troubling beliefs ( in yellow), though not to the extent non-theological evangelicals did, betraying the sad and sorry shape of the modern evangelical movement.

  2. This is more evidence in support of Singaporean Christian leader Samuel Tow’s 1983 warning address, “Today’s Evangelicals, Tomorrow’s Liberals.” They may be Evangelicals, but they’re not Christians.
