Church’s Beauty and the Beast Themed Easter Production Sees Belle Crucified on Stage

Church of the Rock in Winnipeg, led by pastor Mark Hughes, is known for its unique easter sermons, interpreting the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord of glory as Hollywood blockbusters. These have ranged from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, to Toy Story, Star Wars, Tombstone, Indiana Jones, Robin Hood, Back to the Future, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Avengers. In fact, Dissenter covered their 2022 Easter sermon, which was Jesus as told via The Lion King.

In 2018, the church also told the Easter story using The Avengers story, with Loki playing the role of Satan and Iron Man Jesus, who gets crucified on stage, featuring the devil singing REM’s – It’s The End Of The World As We Know It and Jesus Chumbawumba’s Tubthumping (“I get knocked down, but I get up again, You are never gonna keep me down.”)

For this year’s Easter sermon/ production, the church performed a christianitized reenactment of Beauty and Beast, repletethe pastor dressed as a witch, and a final scene where Belle is inexplicably crucified while Mrs. Potts sings Lynyrd Skynyrd’ ‘Free Bird.’

What else is there to say, honestly?

  1. This is all so cringingly bizarre, it is like we are living in a postmodern art film that somehow became real life.

  2. This church is a haven for the perverse and deceived.

And I still wonder if he is related to David Hughes of the Disney extension theme park known as Church by the Glades ? (I know he is not, but his apostasy is on a similar level)
