Whistleblower Inside Hillsong Alleges Major Financial Misconduct +Money Fraud

A whistleblower and former employee of Hillsong church is suing the embattled denomination, alleging that the Australian megacorp has moved millions of dollars out of the country to hide its finances from Australian charity regulators and regularly engaged in money and tax fraud.

In March of this year, the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profits Commission (ACNC) launched an investigation after employee Natalie Moses, who worked in the church’s finance department as the Fundraising and Governance Coordinator, stepped forward and made the bold claims.

She alleged that Hillsong leaders were concealing and downplaying how much money they were bringing in by sending large sums of tax-free money to former senior global pastors Brian and Bobbie Houston before the two resigned.

Moses says they were also moving money around in ways that Australian charity laws do not permit them, such as using money given to the Hillsong Foundation Trust, which is all tax deductible, to cover the church’s $9 million deficit. She also alleges they were sending large amounts of money overseas, which is prohibited because there is no way for regulators to know if the money is being spent on charitable services, which it must by law be earmarked for.

Furthermore, Moses alleges that many of Hillsong’s musicians were classified as “pastors” solely for tax purposes, which enabled them to receive half their salaries tax-free, whileย also earning millions of dollars in royalties from the sale of music, further cheating taxpayers.

Hillsong has not commented on the case yet other than to say “As the matter is now before the Federal Court of Australia, it is inappropriate to make any further comment”
