Lion King of Judah? Church ‘Crucifies’ and Resurrects Simba for Easter Play
Church of the Rock in Winnipeg, led by pastor Mark Hughes, is known for its unique Easter sermons, interpreting the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord of Glory as Hollywood blockbusters, ranging from Monty Python and the Holy Grail to Toy Story, Star Wars, Tombstone, Indiana Jones, Robin Hood, Back to the Future, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
In fact, we last covered them after they crucified Iron Man on stage and then crucified Buzz Lightyear.
From their 2022 Easter sermon, The Lion King of Jesus, we get the gospel stories and the passion reinterpreted with Simba being Jesus and Scar being Satan, because a straightforward exegesis and the proclamation of the good news of the resurrection as told by the scriptures is boring.
Including covers of Gun N’ Roses and Adele, Shakira, fart-jokes from Pumbaa, and heretical parts like Simba being kind of a dum-dum who acts like he’s five years old and doesn’t know anything, it’s blasphemous and messy and is not a good time.

This church has obviously lost all reverence toward our Lord Jesus Christ. Absolutely idiotic.
Why don’t they just tell the real story of the crucifixion? This just seems like needless extra steps that obscure the actual message.
