A First! New Mexico County Bans Abortion, Despite State Being Pro-Choice
A county in New Mexico has become the first county in America to ban abortions, despite the state allowing abortions up until birth. More than 60 individual cities in the United States have declared themselves “sanctuary cities”, but this is the first county to do so. A month earlier, the town of Hobbs in New Mexico declared itself to be a sanctuary city, the first in a state controlled by the Democratic Party.
Lea County comprises around 65,000 people with 29 towns, cities and villages. Due to the nature of the ban, several cities in the county must pass their ordinance.
Commissioner Pat Sims was emotional before reading the ordinance, which passed 5-0, lamenting that abortion was happening in the state: “I am appalled and ashamed that we’re even sitting here discussing killing babies. Shame on all of us for even talking about full-term abortion.” The ordinance also prohibits mail order abortions, like the abortion pill.
Good. These decisions should rest with local governments.
