IFB Preacher Apologizes After Viral ‘I Wouldn’t Punish Rape’ Comments Spark Outrage

A week after Independent Fundamental Baptist Pastor Bobby Leonard of Bible Baptist Tabernacle in Monroe, North Carolina, was revealed making some genuinely horrific and anti-biblical comments about being a juror in a rape case, he has issued an apology, saying that he “failed to uphold the biblical values of love and compassion.”

During a sermon in August, Leonard lamented that so many young women were wearing shorts rather than pants or skirts and told his congregation, “If you dress like that and you get raped, and I’m on the jury, he’s going to go free” because “A man’s a man.”

It is harrowing, foolish, and utterly disqualifying theology, demonstrating that Leonard has no business being a pastor despite the decades he has served as one, as his view betrays a fundamental inability to handle the scriptures correctly in several key categories and topics. (And makes one wonder why nothing happened for months after preaching it)

After a national backlash as a result of the uncovering by Bad Preacher Clips (@badsermons), Leonard said he wished to “express my deep regret for the statements made from the pulpit” and was “only beginning to understand the hurt and offense caused.”

Describing his position (which he said he’s held for decades) as “foolish and sinful,” he shared his belief that rape is, in fact, heinous, inexcusable and should be “punished severely,” concluding, “I deserve for folks to be extremely upset with me, but I ask you to please forgive me.’

DOZENS of Women Accuse Deceased Prosperity Preacher of Rape, Forced Abortions, CSA, and Torture

Dozens of women have come forward to make on-the-record accusations against the late TB Joshua, citing widespread rape, abuse and torture, according to a recently revealed BBC investigation. The investigation took more than two years to complete and was done in collaboration with the international media platform Open Democracy. It involved over 15 BBC journalists spanning multiple continents, gathering and archiving hundreds of hours of eyewitness testimony and other footage.

In 2021, Nigeria’s most controversial pastor, the “prophet” T. B. Joshua, passed away at the age of 57. Joshua was best known for being the head of the Synagogue Church of all Nations (SCOAN) that claimed 15,000 members, along with owning and operating Emmanuel TV. His net worth was estimated to be between 15-25 million dollars and was considered one of the richest pastors in the world.

A false prophet and heretic, he routinely made prophecies that did not come true, including saying that Flight MH370 would be soon be discovered, that the 200 girls kidnapped by Boko Haram would quickly be released, and that the 2014 Ebola scare and COVID-19 would end mere months after they begun.

He was known far and wide for his claims he had healed thousands from HIV, cancer, blindness, deafness, and had even raised people from the dead on a regular basis. A prosperity preacher huckster in its purest form, he pushed the usual tropes like miraculous healing water, miracle bead, and even “holy stickers” that would cure every ailment and physical malady under the sun. To bolster his image, he claimed he had a divine birth, spending 15 months in the womb.

According to a new report by the BBC, dozens of his ex-congregants have come forward accusing the heretic of abusing them in his Lagos compound:

  • “Dozens of eyewitness accounts of physical violence or torture carried out by Joshua, including instances of child abuse and people being whipped and chained
  • Numerous women who say they were sexually assaulted by Joshua, with a number claiming they were repeatedly raped for years inside the compound
  • Multiple allegations of forced abortions inside the church following the alleged rapes by Joshua, including one woman who says she had five terminations
  • Multiple first-hand accounts detailing how Joshua faked his “miracle healings”, which were broadcast to millions of people around the world.”

The Namibian recounts one story :

Jessica Kaimu, now a broadcast journalist in Namibia, says she was just 17 and a virgin when Joshua raped her in the bathroom of his penthouse, within weeks of her becoming a disciple. “I was screaming and he was whispering in my ear that I should stop acting like a baby… I was so traumatized, I couldn’t cry,” she says. Jessica says this encounter was repeated again and again, throughout the five years she spent as a disciple. Her account mirrors that of other women who spoke to the BBC, and also of accounts by four of Joshua’s male personal servants who were given the job of clearing up the physical evidence of this abuse.”

Veggie Tales Creator Phil Vischer Comes out as Pro-Choice

Veggie Tales creator Phil Vischer, the man who swears he’s not progressive despite knocking creationists as a bunch of dummiescrediting his white privilege for the success of his show, claiming he didn’t know there were such things black Christians until he was an adult, thumbing his nose at “Cracker Barrel Christians,” and most recently getting upset at Christians for opposing LGBTQ.

After100 tweets and replies later, Phil’s true position has seemingly emerged. He considers himself ‘pro-life’, yet would allow and support exceptions for rape and incest. He argues that this position is completely acceptable for a Christian to hold, getting prickly and indignant when challenged. The conversations in no particular order:

Never forget that last year, Phil questioned the point of overturning Roe v. Wade well before the Supreme Court leak, agreeing with his co- host that it wouldn’t really bring down the abortion rate, and that trying to get it overturned is ‘almost irrelevant at this point’

It’s categorically false that most pro-life organizations support exceptions for rape and incest. Then again, Phil and his podcast co-host Skye Jethani have frequently argued that liberals and Democrats are the real pro-lifers who have been reducing abortion, not the conservatives. Phil’s said that if people *actually* care about bringing down the abortion rate, they’d vote for the Democrats and not for Republican candidate, showing how broken and compromised his thinking is about this issue.

‘Pro-life’ with exceptions for rape and incest is functionally pro-choice. It is ageist and dehumanizing, and it’s good that Phil has finally exposed his treacherous thinking for the world to see.

Prominent SBC Pastor Suggests ‘Abortion is Not Murder’ in Cases of Rape and Incest

Warning, a graphic image ahead.

Yesterday we revealed that prominent SBC pastor Dwight McKissic, a progressive denominational gadfly, came out as functionally pro-choice by stating that legally speaking, women should be able to murder their babies in the womb in cases of rape or incest. Now, he is saying that he does not label abortion in cases of rape to be “murder” and says that it is “compassionate” to allow women to kill their children in-utero.

It seems like a compassionate and nuanced thing to say, until you realize that what he want to be legally allowed and legislatively protected is using chemicals and curettes to slice up babies and turn their bodies into little pink slurries of blood and bone, scraped into the trash or incinerator.

Naturally, one might ask how he can say this, given it involved killing an actual baby. McKissic has clarified that it should still be her choice if she wants to do it or not, but that he doesn’t consider it “murder” and would not label it as such, because the compassionate thing is to let some abortionist rip of the babies legs and arms in the womb before crushing his or her skull and yanking it out.

‘This is not compassionate. This is murder, and McKissic is absolutely disqualified from the pastorate for being able to see it.

More Details on the Pastor Hillsong Promoted After He Was Caught in Adulterous Sex Scandal

Hillsong is a mess in part because they don’t view most sex scandals as particularly bothersome- a perspective shared by many within the pentecostal and charismatic movement who have historically demonstrated high levels of tolerance for sinful and scummy behavior. They’re bad, sure, but it’s nothing a bit of time off can’t cure. That is unless they no longer remain useful, which in that case, like Brian Houston, they get cast aside.

For the vast majority of evangelicalism, there is no such thing as ‘disqualified from the ministry’ on account of ‘no longer being biblically qualified and able to meet the strict standards the Lord has on elders and pastors’. Far from it. Rather there is an easily taken pathway to a life temporarily lost.

The ‘Evangelical Ministry Restoration and Reintegration Process’ is the system whereby disgraced pastors who get kicked out of their churches, usually for sexual sins and committing adultery, become reintegrated into Christendom and restored to their former glory, through a 10 step process seen here.

Case in point. In early January of 2021, Pastor Reed Bogard, who helped found Hillsong NYC and Hillsong LA and was up until this point the senior pastor at Hillsong Dallas, released a short, curt, prerecorded message during the January 3 service announcing that he and his “pastrix” wife Jess were resigning. Three months later, Hillsong shut down the campus and disbanded the church, never once mentioning that weeks before he resigned, Bogard was accused of rape by a staffer (we are withholding her name) that he had an adulterous affair with years earlier in 2013.

10 years ago, Reed Bogard engaged in an extra-marital affair (ie, clergy sexual abuse) when he was a pastor at Hillsong NYC. This is not surprising, as internal documents later revealed that he was out of control, spending like a drunken pirate, drinking heavily, smoking tons of weed, and bullying the staff, having developed a reputation as an aggressive person.

The affair only lasted about 4 months, at which time Bogard would incessantly ask for sex, even taking her to his apartment in the infamous “Hillsong Party Building” where most of the senior leaders of the New York church lived, which would have exposed her. Following this, the woman confessed to a board member in late 2014 that she’d engaged in an affair with Bogard. Hillsong higher-ups investigated the claims and concluded it to have been ‘consensual’ despite the power dynamics at work. Christian Post reports:

Ben Houston, Brian Houston’s son, who was leading Hillsong LA and serving as Bogard’s boss when the former junior staffer first revealed her sexual relationship with him to Hillsong senior leaders, told investigators that he had spoken with his father and members of the church’s global board about the relationship. Investigators reported that Bogard was “stood down publicly from the platform in Los Angeles for a period of either eight or twelve months,” noting that “stories differ.”

Houston told the investigators that “the nature and extent of such discipline were handed down by top leadership in Australia,” the report reads.

Thereafter, Mr. Bogard was returned to full Pastoral duties, and was eventually awarded a promotion to Lead Pastor in the newly created Church location in Dallas, Texas,” the report adds.

“The board came up with a plan that Mr. Bogard would not be permitted to serve in leadership in any capacity for twelve months, he would not be on platform for 12 months and he would undergo counseling,” investigators said.

Despite the sexual encounter being established and known, it was never made public or told to the congregation. It was not disqualifying, but rather was a mere blip. It was hidden from everyone, and Bogard was promoted from church-planting pastor at Hillsong NYC to Senior Pastor at Hillsong Dallas in 2019, where he remained until he stepped down in 2021.

Senior leadership at Hillsong knew and did not care, and that is why it is an inevitability that more stories will come to light about similar behavior. They spent a decade covering them up, which means more will only come into the light.

Hillsong’s many scandals are far from over.
