‘A Vehicle for Profit’: Jill Duggar Details her Family’s Reality TV Finances in ‘Counting the Cost’

(LA Times) For more than a decade, Jill Duggar was the wholesome star of “19 Kids and Counting” and “Counting On,” the sweetly obedient daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar who became the first woman in the family to marry and seemed destined to follow in her parents’ footsteps. Instead, she’s now calling out her family for exploiting her on reality TV.

In “Counting the Cost,” a memoir released on Tuesday, Duggar sheds unprecedented light on the inner workings of her sprawling Christian fundamentalist family, who rose to fame on the cable network TLC and later saw their empire crumble when first-born son Josh Duggar was convicted on child pornography charges in 2021.

The book details Duggar’s decision to walk away from “Counting On” in 2017 — after spending roughly half her life on camera — and her transformation from the cheerful daughter nicknamed “Sweet Jilly Muffin” into a grown woman who wears pants, uses birth control and drinks the occasional piña colada. However, Duggar is not here to expose every family secret; she does not elaborate on the sexual abuse she allegedly experienced as a child — she remains adamant that the information should never have become public — and her brother Josh is a marginal figure in the story. But she has plenty to say about her family’s finances, the toxic dynamic created by their TV stardom and the role that faith played in it all.

“Counting the Cost” paints a critical — if also loving — portrait of family patriarch Jim Bob Duggar, whose obsession with capitalizing on the family’s “window of opportunity” and belief in his God-given authority over his offspring led to their financial exploitation, creating painful rifts that remain unresolved. (The book, published under her maiden name, was written with her husband, Derick Dillard, and author Craig Borlase.) The book details how reality TV made Jim Bob into a wealthy man with an expansive…to continue reading click here.

New ‘Duggar Family Secrets’ Docuseries Highlights Ties to Bill Gothard, IBLP

A new docuseries about the Duggar family and their ties to Bill Gothard and the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) is about to be released, and it features interviews with Jill Duggar, who explains, “There’s a story that’s going to be told, and I would rather be the one telling it.”

“Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets,” which airs June 2, is an expose behind the 19 Kids and Counting family. The show ran for years and became a cultural phenomenon, but was canceled in 2015 after it was revealed that Josh Duggar molested his sisters (he was later imprisoned for 12 years for possession of child pornography), and a spinoff series’ counting on” ended in 2021.

Some of the biggest proponents of the IBLP were Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, who many saw as the “face” of the teachings and spoke at their summer camp. As the Duggar women have married and left home, many have repudiated the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist beliefs they grew up with that were showcased on their show, particularly IBLP. Recently, their Jinger Duggar was sharply critical of the movement and how it impacted her upbringing, writing in her new book ‘Becoming Free Indeed’ that the practices of the IBLP were “built on rules, not God’s Word.”

Mercifully, however, is that they have not abandoned the faith, as many do, but instead have grown deeper in it, espousing Calvinistic and reformed theology, especially Jinger and Jessa, who can frequently be seen retweeting Charles Spurgeon and John Piper and talking about the sovereignty of God.

By way of backround, Bill Gothard is an American Christian minister and speaker who founded the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) in 1961, a non-profit organization that teaches biblical principles for family, education, government, and business.

Popular with many conservative, IFB, and homeschool parents, he was perhaps best known for his Advanced Training Institute (ATI), a homeschooling program with a curriculum based on the Sermon on the Mount, and his strict teaching on proper Christian behavior, which focused on the importance of following biblical principles in all aspects of life, emphasizes the authority of the Bible, personal responsibility, and the concept of a biblical “chain of command.” For decades the organization put on conferences, training seminars, and published books, booklets, and other materials to promote its teachings.

In later years, Gothard and the IBLP faced increasing pressure and scrutiny. Critics raised several concerns, including allegations of sexual misconduct, lack of transparency and accountability for abuse victims, cult-like practices, rigid gender roles, legalism, the promotion of cruel child-rearing practices, and suspect theological interrelations of the scripture. Former members have reported feeling isolated and controlled by the organization, and many have criticized IBLP’s teachings as overly restrictive and rigid.

In 2014, 34 women came forward with stories of sexual harassment and misconduct by Gothard, including four who alleged molestation. This led to the resignation of several IBLP board members and his role at the organization. Several alleged victims soon filed a lawsuit against Bill Gothard and IBLP but withdrew it in 2018, citing complexities and the statute of limitations.

Jessa (Duggar) Seewald Responds to EVIL Claims She Had Abortion After Tragic Miscarriage

Days ago, 19-Kids-and-Counting Alum Jessa Duggar Seewald revealed that she suffered a miscarriage and had a procedure to remove the lifeless baby from her womb. Her dishonest critics have capitalized on her heartache, accusing her of having an abortion, something she’s been militantly against, to remove the dead child from inside her.

Seewald revealed the tragic story in a video while thanking the Lord and praising him for his goodness, even in her pain and loss. We covered the story with the transcript here.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “dilation and curettage (D&C) is a procedure to remove tissue from inside your uterus. Health care providers perform dilation and curettage to diagnose and treat certain uterine conditions — such as heavy bleeding — or to clear the uterine lining after a miscarriage or abortion.”

Responding to critics, she revealed more about her devastating news, pointing out what any sane human being knows while understandably describing her critics as “severely distasteful” in their efforts to score points off a grieving mother’s tears.

Duggar Family Reacts to Guilty Verdict ‘This Trial has felt more like a Funeral than Anything Else’

With Josh Duggar found guilty and facing 20 years in prison for possessing and receiving child pornography- a sentence he will hear the outcome of in April 2022- his family has reacted to the news with a dismay and sad acceptance, with most asking for prayer for his wife Anna and their seven children that will be left without a father, possibly for decades, along with his many victims.

Of particular note is that many of the statements are deeply theological in nature. This is on account that many are professing Christians, either pastoring or attending conservative Christian churches.

Ben Seewald is a pastor of a small Baptist church in Arkansas. He and his wife Jessa (Duggar) believe in the Doctrines of Grace, and are frequently found quoting Charles Spurgeon, RC Sproul, John Calvin, and others. They write:

Jeremy Vuolo is a pastor who is currently attending Master’s Seminary in California, under pastor John MacArthur. His wife Jinger (Duggar) was baptized a few months ago at Grace Church, with her writing “I came to realize that although I was baptized at the age of 11, I didn’t really come to know and love Jesus until I was 14 years old. On Sunday, I was able to publicly declare that I have been joined to Jesus Christ in his life, death, and resurrection.” They brought the bible to bear on the situation.

Derick and Jill Dillard are both professing Christians and brought the scriptures as well, describing the trial as a type of’ funeral.’

Amy Duggar, their cousin, has been openly critical of Josh the entire time, and made her feelings known.

Last is a statement from the family’s patriarch and matriarch, who professed their love for their son, their desire to continue to pray for him, prayers for victims of Child Sexual Abuse Material, and for their daughter-in-law.

We all ought to echo these prayers.
