ELCA Bishop Decries Trump’s DC Law and Order Initiatives As ‘Systemic Evil,’ Calls For ‘Fasting and Prayer’ to Stop Him
Bishop Leila M. Ortiz of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) has condemned President Trump’s recent law and order initiatives in the District of Columbia, calling them a “systemic evil that operates without shame” and calling for three days of prayer and fasting to oppose the measures.
Earlier this month, Trump issued a presidential order deploying the National Guard to Washington, D.C., to address rising crime rates. In response, the ELCA, alongside leaders from the Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) and Episcopal Church, issued a statement titled Fear Is Not a Strategy for Safety, criticizing the initiative.
President Trump justifies assuming control of the D.C. police and deploying the National Guard by declaring our city is “overrun by violent gangs, blood thirsty criminals, roving mobs of youth, drugged out maniacs, and homeless people.” Such sweeping language is both inaccurate and dehumanizing, increasing the risk of indiscriminate arrests and the use of excessive force.
Even one violent crime is one too many, and all Washingtonians deserve to live in safety. But safety cannot be achieved through political theatre and military force. It requires honesty and sustained collaboration between government, civic, and private partners—work now being sidelined…We call on our political and civic leaders to reject fear-based governance and work together in a spirit of dignity and respect—so that safety, justice, and compassion prevail in our city.
In her letter, in true self-aggrandizing form, Bishop Ortiz compares the current situation in DC to the plight of Queen Esther, who “faced a crisis that threatened the very existence of God’s people.” Using Esther an as example, she makes the following proclamation with the following goals:
