Pastor Says Jesus Was Flirting With Samaritan Woman, Offering Her ‘Living Waters’ AKA ‘Semen’

Editor’s note. An earlier version of this post wrongly ascribed the sermon to Rev. Bryan O’Carroll of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Florida. We apologize for the error.

A progressive Episcopal pastor may have just uttered the most grossly twisted interpretation of Scripture, claiming that Jesus was flirting with the Samaritan woman, who was in turn trash-talking him about his semen and sexual abilities.

The The Rev. Dr. Bill Murray is the Rector of Holy Innocents Episcopal Church in Atlanta, Georgia.

According to their mission statement, they are “committed to following Jesus in every aspect of our lives. Our vision is to live together as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. We are all on a spiritual journey together and we need each other to fulfill our call as ministers of the gospel.”

During his March 8 sermon, Murray, using John 4 and the story of the Samaritan woman, offered a novel exegesis of the text, claiming the two were flirting over a sexual double entendre in the use of the phrase “living water.”

“So what is living water? Buckle up. Living water is a first century euphemism for ‘semen.’ ….She thinks it is the more innuendo level, Jesus is talking on a different level.

And so the next line, if you know that this is an innuendo, if you know that this is a comment, is hilarious, because she literally goes: ‘hey buddy, you ain’t got a bucket, how you gonna give me that ‘living water?’

It’s funny. It’s a funny line. This woman is actually, as a friend of mine said, this woman’s talking trash at the well with Jesus. I didn’t know that’s what the story was about.

But they’re flirting and they’re joking and they’re teasing. And at no point does Jesus condemn her. In fact, just the opposite, he laughs and he flirts back and he goes, ‘no, no, no, I’m talking about a water of life and of hope. I’m inviting you into a deeper conversation with God. But that’s pretty funny. It’s pretty good.

‘Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)

Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

John 4:4-15 NIV.

The episcopal church no longer exists as part of the Historic Church, nor does the church of England. The only faithful Anglicans are in Africa now. The remnants claiming African Anglican nexus are mostly bogus. The Epispcopal Priest speaking, from the 1928 ed. BCP Ordinal, must surely know the horrible punishment to ensue. I have seen to that. Anathema.

No, that would’ve been sinful. Jesus is the same who said to look at a woman with lust has already sinned (Matt. 5:28-29, etc.). He is the same who said that sensuality is sin (Mark 7:21-22, etc.). Living water refers to the Holy Spirit …

“38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.” (John 7:38-39)

      says:

The Bible does refer to becoming born again, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, as being seeded. 1 John 3:9, for example, the Greek word used is “sperma” (wich refers to any type of seed, and also is used to refer to offspring). It is figurative, of course. The concept of being born again points back to the corruption of creation when Adam sinned. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is a new birth that addresses that corruption.

The “pastor’s” sin is not necessarily that particular analogy/comparison, but rather the sensuality, making a joke about it, essentially claiming Jesus sinned.

    says:

This is such proof that someone does not know the Old and New Testament. In Numbers 5, if a husband suspects the wife has committed adultery, her innocence or guilt is based on the outcome of her drinking the “bitter water” which was holy water mixed with dust from the tabernacle floor and washed off curses. If she is innocent, she is not harmed; if guilty she dies of a wasting disease. Much later, Jesus, offers the Samaritan woman who has had 5 “husbands” which spells out the truth of her situation, says if she knew the gift that he alone can offer she would have asked him for the living water that forgives and makes new as it wells up in each sinner who receives Jesus Christ as one’s person Savior. No longer a question of guilt or innocence as all have sinned, there is not one righteous apart from Jesus of Nazareth.
