Kenneth Copeland’s Granddaughter Says He’s Not That Rich, Is On A Mission to Rewrite His Legacy
Courtney Copeland Acuña, 32, is the co-founder and CEO of You and Me Media, a podcast company that produces and distributes high level content for clients. She’s also the newly minted Chief Marketing Officer for Kenneth Copeland Ministries, and the granddaughter of the famed prosperity heretic.
Appearing on the Similarly Different Podcast, she talks about dispelling false stories about her grandfather and her mission to present him in a better light to the world. (Note, we edited out a judicious use of the term ‘like’ for the transcript.)
In November of last year, my grandfather was like, “Hey, do you feel like it’s time for you to move home?” We’re like, Yeah, actually, we’ve been talking about that. So we came back and in April, he just stopped me and he was like, “all that stuff that you went and learned out in LA over the last seven years. I need you to, I need that here. I need what you learned out there. I need it here.” And my dad, after a series of events became CEO again. And now my dad’s CEO, I’m CMO, which is crazy.
But I see it as an honor. Three years ago, I would have maybe not seen it as quite the honor. I would have seen it as a project. Like, I need to fix this public perception of what the world sees of my grandfather. And I just don’t see it that way.
If people knew what happened out there and the amount of people that we helped and the amount of money that’s given every month to other organizations at home. Like we do a disaster relief project.
Q: Why don’t you guys announce it?
Well, that’s part of my…why I’m going back. I’m watching all these people post trash about my grandfather. I’m like, you are so wrong. I just yell it from the rooftops. Like, you have no idea.
But also my grandfather doesn’t care. I asked him, I was like, what do you think about all this? Which he doesn’t even know about. He’s not on social media. He doesn’t watch TV. So he has no idea that any of this is going on.
You know, I told him…there’s a documentary coming out. They flew a drone up to your front door. And he was like, I don’t listen to the praise and I don’t listen to the hate. I just keep my head down and do my job. If the Lord wants to shut this down, I’ll shut it down.”
She continues:
That was his response. I’m just like, cool. I’ll just ride that wave with you, you know? And I do have a personal vendetta that like, I’m going to try to rewrite the narrative around my grandfather and the legacy that I feel like he’ll leave behind him when he goes.
He’s 88 years old. Like you put your 88 year old grandfather on a platform and like, see what he says. There’s going to be some moments where you’re like, “eeeh.”
But I see it as a high honor to get to work for him and you know the legacy that will come afterwards it’s not about him. That’s the thing, he doesn’t- my grandfather cares for zero- right that’s why they call him ‘brother Copeland.’ People are always like “why do they call him brother Copeland?” He doesn’t care to be called reverend or you know evangelist or whatever. Like, I’m your brother.”
Among being regarded as one of the richest teachers in America, Copeland is known for giving false prophecies about COVID being destroyed, throwing someone in a wheelchair to the floor, casting away bald spots in Jesus’ name, running his own bizarro Bible college, casting away bald spots in Jesus’ name, laughing demonically at the media for 34 seconds straight, claiming God told him he’ll live to 120 years, receiving a $230,000 luxury car from a dying man as a “seed offering,” and claiming that God is basically a powerless wimp.
Copeland Acuña also addresses claims about his prosperity teaching:
“The prosperity gospel is not something that we would title ourselves. It’s something that’s kind of been labeled on us. But what that comes from, is the word “prosperous” actually means ‘nothing missing, nothing broken. And that is a hill I will die on.’
We believe that God wants you whole in every area of your life. He wants you whole in your body and your family and your finances with your relationships at your job. We believe that God wants you to live a prosperous life…and when people have an issue with the prosperity gospel, they’re gonna have an issue with heaven…heaven is paved with streets of gold and there’s a mansion with your name on it. So when people have an issue with prosperity, they’re not gonna really enjoy heaven.”
When pressed about how much her grandfather makes- with Kenneth Copeland living in a 18,000sqf mansion valued at $7M (seen below) and reportedly to have a net worth of anywhere from $300M to $760M ( In 2008, Copeland claimed to be a billionaire)- she describes the speculation as the result of people’s boredom.
“Honestly, I think people are bored, you know? The people that- it’s just like a fun thing to go crazy about. I honestly don’t understand. If people knew what my grandfather was actually worth, they would be so bored. Yeah. Like the people making the YouTube videos, and there’s a documentary called The Religion Business.
If they were accurate on their research at all and they knew what my grandfather was worth, they would be bored out of their minds. So, I just don’t really- whatever the number is you think my grandfather’s worth, just divide it by like, a lot, and you’re maybe close. I don’t know. I don’t I don’t get the hype.”
