‘They Think We’re Stupid.’ NAMB Response to SBC Pastor Who Trashed Charlie Kirk Universally Panned

The North American Mission Board has responded after an SBC pastor, who is speaking at their upcoming event, criticized Charlie Kirk during his recent sermon by insulting his character and implying that because he lived by the sword, he died by the sword.
James T. Roberson III, the senior pastor of Bridge Church NYC, said during a message, among other things:
I think Charlie Kirk and other political activists, particularly some on the evangelical right, often see ideas and policies that claim to be Christian, but they’re fought with in a carnal posture. They’re fighting for Jesus with anger and harshness and rage. And the danger of that is when you when you fight spiritual battles in a carnal way, the world responds with that same carnality. It’s as if the world says we know how to do worldly better than you…It is carnal to celebrate his death. To lack empathy for someone who doesn’t have empathy for you is to live in carnality
..At the same time, while he fought for ideals that he believed were Christian, I also denounced the way he carried himself and especially the way he talked about black people...I also grieve for our country that elevates people into hero status and martyr status so quickly...just because someone fought for Jesus doesn’t mean they fought like Jesus.
In response to the outcry, including a widely circulated letter from Pastor Tom Buck demanding an apology and Roberson’s removal, NAMB President Kevin Ezell issued a statement about the event. He emphasized the “poorly worded” use of the term “carnality” rather than addressing the rest of Roberson’s remarks, such as accusing Kirk of being a racist who didn’t “fight like Jesus” and claiming he was undeserving of being viewed as a hero or martyr.

Few are satisfied with this statement, however, nor with the fact that Ezell disabled replies to his post. His missive has been requoted dozens of times, with none of the responses being positive. A sampling of replies include:

Tom Buck has also responded, and he was not assuaged or mollified.
NAMB has responded. I personally feel it is a weak response at best. Ezell says the only problem was that Roberson meant to warn of the danger of Christians responding to “carnal weapons” and that he didn’t mean that he “invited or provoked the violence.”
BUT, here’s what Roberson said: “I think Charlie Kirk and other political activists, particularly on the evangelical right, often see ideas and policies that claim to be Christian, but they’re fought WITH a CARNAL posture. They’re fighting for Jesus WITH anger and harshness and rage. And the DANGER of THAT is WHEN you fight spiritual battles IN a CARNAL way, the world responds WITH that SAME carnality.”
I don’t know how else to understand his words than to say that Charlie Kirk fought with a carnal posture and that invited the DANGER of the world responding with the SAME carnality. Ezell simply tries to put lipstick on a pig of a statement and says Roberson didn’t mean what he said. I’ll stick with Jesus who said, “Out of the mouth speaks the heart.”
Let’s consider something else Roberson said in that same sermon about Charlie Kirk. “I also grieve for our country that elevates people into hero status and martyr status so quickly.”
Yet the Sunday after George Floyd’s death, Roberson had NO problem elevating Floyd to hero and martyr status. He even said God was joining in the protests being held to elevate Floyd. He said: “I’m here today to tell you God hears you and He’s in the protests saying George Floyd’s name.”
Could someone from NAMB ask James Roberson if he believes that God is joining in the prayer vigils being held and is saying Charlie Kirk’s name. If I were a betting man, I know where I’d put my money.
…Here is another statement from the same sermon about Charlie Kirk. “I also denounced the way he (Kirk) carried himself and especially the way he talked about black people.” That is clearly implying that Charlie Kirk talked about black people in derogatory ways. It’s a way of accusing him of being a racist.
@kevezell, what do you think these words mean? Do you denounce Charlie Kirk for how he talked about black people and believe he was a racist? If so, could you give us some examples of this charge made against a fellow Christian.
@NAMB_SBC and @sendnetwork, this is NOT sufficient. I stand by my open letter.

This is one of the reasons why I’m having a hard time finding a church to go to.
Some of the posts pointed out, and I agree, that it appears to possibly be a case of the shepherd being led by the wolves in sheep’s clothing. He essentially took the side of those who have severely falsely accused Charlie, and implied his agreement with them by saying he denounced the way Charlie spoke about black people. But here’s the deal. Adding to God’s standards, in pharasiacal fashion, is every bit as wicked, prideful, carnal, and fleshly as taking away from them, changing them, or ignoring them altogether. Considering Jesus harsh (HARSH) rebukes of the Pharisees, including telling them that it would be worse for them on the day of judgment than for sodom and gomorrah, adding to and changing God’s standards in Pharisaical fashion is worse …
Which is why it was said, in response, that he needed to be more specific. That is, point out the specific SIN. And if Charlie didn’t commit any sin he’s being accused of committing, then you cannot accuse him of being carnal. That’s GOD’S STANDARDS. Not the prideful standards of mankind, or a preacher named Roberson, or busybody trouble-making wolves in sheep’s clothing.
NAME THE SIN !!! Right? Or do you know better than God knows? Are your standards superior to His? Why should you expect others to submit to you first, rather than the Lord?
If you are falsely accusing, or justifying, appeasing, condoning, supporting, false accusers, then YOU are the one who’s sinning, and therefore being fleshly and carnal.
Is it not God’s standards that define what is or is not carnal? Or does Mr. Roberson believe he himself makes that determination?
Is it not that line between what is sinful and what is not, that defines the same, what is fleshly and what is of the spirit? Does one shift on the sand, according to relativist whims of mankind, and the other not?
It has reached the point these days where slinging false accusations all over the place has become just normal and usual practice. IT IS SIN. And it is grievous sin. It does not unite. It divides. It does not produce peace, it produces conflict. It doesn’t fix anything, it makes things worse. You cannot fight sin with sin. You cannot defeat evil with evil.
It’s the carnal, corrupt, flesh that tells you that peace, reconciliation, and unity can be manufactured by essentially saying, in so many words, “yeah, I didn’t like the way he spoke about black people either”. That’s worse than the shepherd being led by the sheep. That’s a shepherd being led by the wolves in sheep’s clothing. All indications are that he’s trying to appease and appeal to the wicked people he’s addressing. NO, you must not be conciliatory toward wickedness. To justify wickedness is itself an abomination, the Bible says. The Gospel is not shared by appealing to wickedness. It is not shared by feeding wickedness. It is not shared by being conciliatory to the wicked. It is the “knowledge of the truth”, and the bold, unashamed, fearless proclamation of the TRUTH …
Instead of fearlessly leading the sheep, telling them “NAME THE SIN!”, he spinelessly says “yeah, I didn’t like how he talked either” and thereby joins in and justifies their wickedness.
“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” – Jesus
What is the “mission” of the missions board? Is it to share the true Gospel of Jesus Christ, or is it to spread some other gospel ????
If you are with Him, then you abide by His standards, all of His standards, and only His standards. You do not add to them. You do not change them. You do not take away from them. You do not ignore them. Otherwise, He is not truly your Lord and Master, you have not truly submitted to Him, and you yourself are being led by your corrupt, carnal flesh.
The wicked world is always going to respond carnally. They’re enslaved to their flesh. That’s the entire point and reason for the Gospel, going all the way back to Creation. That IS the Gospel. Should we expect the wicked to respond righteously? Especially if we’re appealing to and condoning their wickedness? No, when you start appealing to wickedness, you’re preaching a completely false gospel.
Scripture says that if we’re doing what we’re supposed to do, the wicked world will respond even more “carnally”, and with even more hostility. Not less. That’s why they crucified Jesus. That’s why all but one Apostle was put to death. The fleshly and carnal retaliates and lashes out, it gnashes it’s teeth, in rebellion and defiance. Mankind has never liked hearing the truth.
To appeal to and appease that fleshly defiance is the epitome of doing carnal warfare according to the flesh …
It is very important. Stick with God’s standards and only God’s standards. Not the standards of the world. It is extremely important to NAME THE SIN, bring the two or three witnesses, do the diligent inquiry, and substantiate it all with scripture. If you’re spouting off a bunch of false accusations, especially from the pulpit, then you are the problem, you are the troublemaker, you are creating divisions apart from the one single dividing line that God has established, you are creating nothing but more conflict, strife, chaos and confusion, serving not the Lord, but serving the Deceiver, who at the very beginning, falsely accused the Creator.
The marxists want to sell the idea that the problem is systemic, with their goal being to tear down and replace the system with their own.
No, the problem is in the heart, as scripture teaches, as Jesus said. It’s in the heart, and 99.999% of the time, it has nothing to do with skin color. We, of all colors of skin, look at others of different color of skin than our own, and we’re apprehensive and wary. We have an expectation that the individual we see could likely be trouble, cause trouble, and would sin against us in some manner. And of course, the marxist-minded want to exacerbate that waryness and apprehension, because it feeds into the root of what marxism actually is – guilty until proven innocent, and in many cases guilty even when proven innocent. Preventative, preemptive, pre-crime. That’s marxism. It is punishment for no crime. Basically an attempt to imprison everyone in order to try to prevent wrongdoing. Which is itself, wicked wrongdoing.
Race relations in this country were a lot better, far better, when we were all talking about “prejudice” (which is in line with scripture), and before all the marxist critical theory mess (which is in direct opposition to scripture – as the marxist goal to “dethrone God”) became prevalent. Because that’s truly what it is, in most cases. It’s not outright racism, or any notions of supremacy or inferiority. It’s apprehension, wariness, and an expectation of trouble, that the individual will be a troublemaker or will sin against us. Skin color is, like other aspects of appearance, merely something that causes us apprehension because of an expectation of what could possibly occur and be done to us. But understand, even when we may have good reason to be wary, we must have the courage to honor the Lord first, and that requires that we do not assume the individual guilty when they have not (yet) done anything wrong. And it also requires having patience and understanding, knowing that the wariness of others, when the situation is reversed and they are wary of us, is not rooted in hatred. We’ve got to learn to give one another the benefit of the doubt, and to not accuse or judge for wrongdoing unless and until there is actual wrongdoing.
We all need to be God Supremacists. Right. He is superior to us all. And we are all infinitely, and therefore equally, inferior to Him.
