Former CCM Star Ray Boltz ‘Marries’ Longtime Gay Partner

Former singer and songwriter Ray Boltz has ‘married’ his longtime partner, Franco Sperduti, after nearly 20 years together.

Boltz, 72, a prominent recording artist through the late 1980s and 1990s, is perhaps best known for his song “Thank You,” which won the 1990 GMA Dove Award for Song of the Year, as well as “Watch the Lamb” and “I Pledge Allegiance to the Lamb.” He briefly retired from music in 2003, separated from his wife, Carol, with whom he had four children, in 2005, and finalized the divorce in 2008.

He reemerged on the music scene in 2010 with his album True, which featured the song “Don’t Tell Me Who to Love,” explicitly defending same-sex relationships. Sometime between 2005 and 2009, he entered into a relationship with his booking agent, Franco Sperduti. The couple moved in together and have been together ever since. Boltz retired again in 2023 without releasing another album.

On his newly created Instagram account, Ray Boltz released a video of himself singing his 2010 song “You Came to Me,” accompanied by images and footage from his wedding.

While we were unable to determine the exact date of the wedding, all indications suggest it was very recent. He explained his reasoning for sharing the video in an accompanying upload, saying:

You see, I used to be in prison. Now, it wasn’t a penitentiary or a county jail kind of prison. It was a prison constructed by religious doctrine and teachings. Teachings that said, ‘you’re not what you feel, you’re what the Bible says you are.’

In fact, ‘you’re not what you feel, you’re what we say the Bible says you are, and we say, the Bible says, you can’t be gay’

Now things are a little different now. I think they’re saying that you can have feelings and they’re not necessarily sin unless you act. Can you imagine what that means to a young person? To say, you’ll never wake up in the morning and have a cup of coffee with your partner. You’ll never take a nap with them in the afternoon or fall asleep on the couch watching a Hallmark Christmas movie. You’ll never walk down the beach holding hands?

No. What you’re saying is if you’re gay and you’re a Christian, you’ll be alone. You’ll live alone and in the end, you’ll be alone. And that is a prison.

When Franco came to me, our love set me free. That’s why I wrote the lyrics, though my prison had no bars, I was too afraid to leave until you came to me.
