Ancient Baptistery, Cathedral Found While Renovating French Shopping Hall
Archaeologists in Vence, France, uncovered a 1,500-year-old early Christian cathedral and a well-preserved baptistery during the renovation of a section of the Vence market halls, a popular dining and shopping destination.
Fabien Blanc-Garidel, the head of the archaeological service for the Nice metropolitan area, hailed the discovery, saying, “This discovery is of such magnitude that it only occurs once every 50 or 60 years in Europe.”
Initially discovering the cathedral while doing upgrades to marketplace, the baptisery was revealed after archaeologists were brought in to excavate the site. According to FSSPX:
The excavations, which began in March 2025 under the supervision of Franck Sumera, general curator of the archaeology service at the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC) of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, have revealed a complex extending over some thirty meters, testifying to the architectural and religious evolution between the 5th and 11th centuries, a period during which the cathedral was abandoned and razed to the ground.
Among the most remarkable features of the site that have just been unveiled to the press is an exterior baptistery, whose basin was found in its original state, without any subsequent modifications. This exceptional preservation makes it a unique object of study for understanding the ritual practices of Late Antique Catholicism.
Tombs of long deceased bishops and canons were also exhumed.
The remains of the baptistry and the cathedral will be integrated into the renovated market halls, with plans to have them visible under glass panels.
