SBC Pastors Introduce Motions to Abolish the ERLC, Pass the Law Amendment At The 2025 Annual Meeting

The Southern Baptist Convention’s 2025 annual conference kicked off with a bang earlier today, as the first two motions introduced sought to abolish the ERLC and pass the Law Amendment, the latter whch is a proposed change to the Constitution of the Southern Baptist Convention that would mandate that churches in friendly cooperation affirm, appoint, or employ “only men as any kind of pastor or elder as qualified by Scripture.”
First to the mic was Juan Sanchez of High Pointe Baptist Church in Austin, Texas, who moved that “the Constitution of the Southern Baptist Convention be amended to include an enumerated sixth item under Article 3, paragraph 1 concerning composition. The enumerated sixth item would read, number 6, “affirms, appoints, or employs only men is any kind of pastor or elder as qualified by scripture.”
Because the executive committee and the past two conventions had already considered this amendment, Sanchez moved that the committee schedule this motion for debate quickly.
Next up was Willie Rice, the pastor and messenger from Calvary Baptist Church in Clearwater, Florida, who shared “I move that pursuant to Bylaw 25, which states to abolish an entity requires a majority vote at two successive conventions that the Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Dallas, Texas, June 10 and 11 vote to abolish the ERLC. “
While the motion to abolish the ERLC was also introduced last year and did unfortunately did not gain much traction, the Law Amendment was only narrowly defeated.
First proposed in 2023 and initially supported by 80% of the messengers, it was expected to gain similar levels of support at the 2024 annual meeting but fell short, requiring 66% of the ratification vote yet only receiving 61%. The failure to ratify was largely due to a cadre of past SBC presidents and personalities, including JD Greear and Bart Barber, who publicly repudiated the amendment.
They should make an amendment that only a man can run for president and any man who says women can be preachers, pastors, elders, is not allowed to run for president but is in fact put out of the denomination altogether and must return any money he was ever paid by the denomination within 30 days of being kicked out.
oh, good grief…
