Church of the Rock in Winnipeg, led by pastor Mark Hughes, is known for its unique Easter sermons, interpreting the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord of glory as Hollywood blockbusters, ranging from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, to Toy Story, Star Wars, Tombstone, Indiana Jones, Robin Hood, Back to the Future, and Pirates of the Caribbean.

From their 2019 Easter sermon Joy Story, we get the gospel stories and the passion reinterpreted with Buzz Lightyear as Jesus, some pink bear as Satan, and Mr. Potato Head as a Donald Trump-like creature, all the while playing covers of Aqua’s ‘Barbie Girl,’ Imagine Dragon’s ‘Believer,’ and ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ by Queen.
When the gospel isn’t enough, nothing is enough.
