Pro-Life Leader Says Abortion is not Abortion if a 10-Year-Old Gets One. She’s Wrong.
Catherine Glenn Foster, President & CEO of Americans United for Life- a nationally known and respected non-partisan Pro-life organization, came under fire after asserting that abortion is not an abortion if a 10-year=old gets one, according to her public testimony.
The strange assertion came during a judiciary committee hearing earlier in the week when Democrat Rep Eric Swalwell asked her whether a 10-year-old girl would or could “choose” to have a baby, referencing the young Ohio girl who was raped and impregnated by a 27-year-old man and then crossed state lines to have an abortion.
ES. “Ms. Foster, do you think a 10-year old would choose to carry a baby?”
CGF. “In the Ohio case, the Ohio Attorney General said that abortion would have been justified.”
S. “Focus on the question. Would a 10-year old choose to carry a baby?”
CGF: “I cannot….”
S: “Do you think a 10-year-old should choose to carry a baby?”
CGF. “I believe it would probably impact her life, and so, therefore, it would fall under any exception and would not be an abortion.”
S. “Wait. It would not be an abortion if a 10-year-old with her parents made the decision not to have a baby that was the result of a rape?”
CGF. “If a 10-year-old became pregnant as a result of rape and it was threatening her life, then that’s not an abortion. So it would not fall under any abortion restriction in our nation.”
After this encounter, Foster was clocked by an opponent who rightly pointed out:
“Abortion is a medical procedure that individuals undergo for a wide range of circumstances…It doesn’t matter whether or not there is a statutory exemption; it is still a medical procedure that is understood to be an abortion….”
If we are being consistent and compassionate, we should never shy away or shirk edge-cases. Instead, they are all the more reason to be clear. Parents of the abused, traumatized girl should not pile more abuse and trauma onto their daughter by forcing her to have an abortion- thereby murdering a child for the crimes of the rapist. Committing an act of violence on another human will not quell the pain.
There are many rape victims out there who did not get pregnant and consequently did not have to kill someone in order to heal from their trauma, so why do so many people insist this is the only way for them to get closure and overcome? Frequently, a child being born is the only redeeming thing to come out of the whole affair. This is true of all rape victims, no matter the age.

Our multidisciplinary team of paediatricians, child psychiatrists, OB-GYNs, peer counsellors, social workers, community volunteers, NGOs and family members help these girls recover from the trauma of their abuse, accompany them in their pregnancy and delivery, and help them in caring for their babies or in giving them up for adoption. There is NO NEED for abortion.”
