Baylor University’s Pro-LGBTQ, Pro-Choice Professor Says Beloved 200y/o Hymn is ‘Sexist’ So he ‘Edited’ it
The woke professor tearing up Baylor University continues his wild ride of unrestrained progressivism, recently interrupting church liturgy to unironically point out that the title of a centuries-old hymn is “sexist” for containing the word “brethren” and that he’s edited and moved around parts of it as to not cause offense.
The last thing that I’ll mention is because I’m Episcopalian, I don’t like to interrupt liturgy. Liturgy is holy. It works when it’s together. We have a song that is 200 years old, which will be our opening hymn. I am well aware that the title Brethren We Have Met to Worship is sexist.
So please know that I am not trying to say, ‘hey, let’s have a conference about racism and diminish women.’ That is absolutely not the message I’m intending to send.
So I want you to know this, and you will probably notice if you’re familiar with the hymn. I have edited it and moved verses around so that sisters, you are just as important as brethren.
The hymn was composed by George Askins, a Methodist minister and itinerant preacher and published in 1819. The original version reads:
Brethren, We Have Met Together
Brethren, we have met to worship,
And adore the Lord our God;
Will you pray with all your power,
While we try to preach the word?
All is vain, unless the Spirit
Of the Holy One come down;
Brethren, pray, and holy manna
Will be showered all around.
Brethren, see poor sinners round you,
Trembling on the brink of woe;
Death is coming, hell is moving;
Can you bear to let them go?
See our fathers, see our mothers,
And our children sinking down;
Brethren, pray, and holy manna
Will be showered all around.
Sisters, will you join and help us?
Moses’ sisters aided him;
Will you help the trembling mourners,
Who are struggling hard with sin?
Tell them all about the Savior,
Tell him that he will be found;
Sisters, pray, and holy manna
Will be showered all around.
Is there here a trembling jailer,
Seeking grace and filled with fears?
Is there here a weeping Mary,
Pouring forth a flood of tears?
Brethren, join your cries to help them;
Sisters, let your prayers abound;
Pray, O! pray, that holy manna
May be scattered all around.
Let us love our God supremely,
Let us love each other too;
Let us love and pray for sinners,
Till our God makes all things new
Then he’ll call us home to heaven,
At his table we’ll sit down.
Christ will gird himself and serve us
With sweet manna all around.
The woke are a pox upon Christianity and society as a whole. God save us from these morally and intellectually compromised individuals…
It’s rich when the guy who can’t formulate or punctuate a sentence is questioning someone else’s intellectual abilities.
So you are unable to frame a defense for this woke loser, instead reverting to a 4th-grade strategy of attempting to insult me? How embarrassing for you : )
-That should be two sentences
-Put a space after your commas
-Replace 4th-grade with 4th grade
-Replace “attempting to insult me” with “insulting me”
-Smiley faces are for children
Really hope you didn’t go to school in the US
There are two sentences
There is a space after the comma
“4th-grade” is acceptable English
No, you attempted to insult me (and failed miserably)
: ) : ) : ) : ) – As you’re obviously under 10, I figured you’d like these : )
Try harder.
I agree 💯%! There’s very little that differentiates between today’s secular universities and so called Christian universities like Baylor or TCU. God will separate the goats from the sheep in Jesus name. ✝️
A face for radio and brain for nothing in particular.
Everyone is included in the original song. If anything, starting out with the brethren just points to male headship within the church, which of course is the biblical model, so they are addressed first since they are the ones with leadership responsibility within the Church of Christ. Everyone is then included, which is the biblical model.
If women find offense with the song, they should be redirected rather than the song being edited. Leading people towards a biblical rather than a secular worldview is a role of leadership.
