Megachurch Pastor Ordered To Pay $2.45 Million For Giving Woman Genital Herpes
A Texas megachurch pastor was ordered to pay a woman nearly two and a half million dollars after a jury found him guilty of battery charges, fraudulent concealment, and intentional infliction of emotional distress for knowingly giving her genital herpes.
Ralph Douglas West II is a popular campus pastor at The Church Without Walls in Houston, Texas, a 24,000-member multisite megachurch founded by his Father, Ralph Douglas West Sr. The church was affiliated with the SBC but left a few years ago after the Southern Baptist Seminary presidents released a statement critical of critical race theory and intersectionality.
According to a report by Click2Houston, Shaun Murphy, an attorney for the woman, says the two met through Facebook in 2018 and had unprotected sex, with West knowing full well he was infected but failing to disclose it.
“The things that we look at for cases like these are essentially four things. Is the defendant infected and how can we prove it? Did he know he was infected, do we have evidence of that?..She got an outbreak two or three days (after they had sex) and then went and got tested. From there, through the medical records, we were able to identify that he was the source of it, in part, because she hadn’t been with anybody else, she had a prior negative test.”
With the verdict in, West, who is still listed on the church’s website but should have been publicly and visibly disqualified from the pastorate long ago, will have to pay $1,450,000 in compensatory damages and $1,000,000 in exemplary/punitive damages.
It is unclear if he will retain his job at The Church Without Walls and continue preaching, but given what we know about the church and how these things play out, we wouldn’t be surprised.

Does it matter? This ‘pastor’ was not married to this woman, and on top of that withheld critical information in order to satisfy his cravings. Obviously, he is biblically unqualified to teach on more than one level…
A pastor of a black megachurch who has herpes … wow … that fact alone should generate a lot of questions. I live in the deep south, and have been longtime friends with an excellent, honorable African American pastor. He pulled the curtain back for me on a few practices that he says are normal in the black church. If he is accurate, black pastors having sex with females in the congregation is very common, and the source of much strife among the women as they vie for their “man”. From what I’ve been told, many black pastors use the General Baptist Conventions as opportunities to secretly take their girlfriends out of town on their church’s dollar. If half of it is true, it’s worse than you every imagined.
