Country Music Star Leaves Nashville Behind to ‘Serve My Local Church’
Country music star Granger Smith announced this he was leaving his career behind to focus on God, his family, and his church. The 43-year-old shared a video on social media where he explained:
“I’ve been so nervous to make this video…this summer is my last ever event tour. I have felt a strong desire to pursue ministry, and this doesn’t mean I’m gonna start a church or a crusade or a revival, this means that me and my family are going to serve our local church.”
It’s an encouraging step from Smith, best known for his 2016 hit “Backroad Song,” and a welcome change from the usual stories of celebrities getting ‘saved and’ then immediately thrust into the limelight and told they are qualified to lead worship or serve as an authority on Scripture.
Rather than seek more exposure, Smith, a long-term believer working toward a master’s degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is leaving the limelight to refocus his priorities by serving Christ and sacrificing his career for the furtherance of the Gospel. Smith was in the news several years ago when his three-year-old son, River, passed away in an accidental drowning incident, and the couple publicly shared that they were resting in the arms of God.
The country star concluded his video by quoting Mark 8:34, “And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”
Smith’s decision is edifying to hear from someone in an industry that has been in open rebellion to Christ for years now. Knowing how wicked things have gotten in the Music City, it should be no surprise that a man under conviction from the Holy Spirit would flee from such a smitable industry to go serve his Lord. We pray that more music industry stars will come under conviction and realize the wickedness that surrounds them and do as Granger Smith has done.
We need more stories like this.
