Gateway Church Slashing Services Amid Dwindling Attendance, Lack Of Tithing
Weeks after Gateway Church revealed it was planning a fresh wave of layoffs as it grapples with financial difficulties stemming from ongoing scandals involving its former pastor, Robert Morris, the church has sent members a memo informing them that it will be cutting services at most of its campuses, starting at the end of the month.
A statement from Gateway reads:
“As we continue to strengthen our relationship with the Gateway Church family and community, we’re making a shift at several of our DFW campuses by hosting our church services on Sundays only. Our Southlake campus will continue to offer both Saturday and Sunday services, and midweek services will remain to serve our communities at all our campuses. This adjustment will allow us to minister to and love our congregation well while prioritizing the needs of our individual campus communities.”
A letter sent to members obtained by Amy Smith adds that the changes will “bring us all closer together in community as a church” and that “our commitment to loving God and loving people remains unchanged.”
All campuses save for their flagship is going down to one service.
According to a letter sent last month to congregants, the church has experienced a significant decline in donations, stating “tithing has not mirrored attendance,” leading to a “significant drop in giving levels.” As a result, the church leadership concluded that “restructuring of our staff is necessary, requiring the tough but necessary step of staff reduction.”
The financial strain was further highlighted late last year in a video intended for church staff but leaked to social media. In the video, Elder Kenneth Fambro disclosed that giving had decreased by 35% to 40%, necessitating imminent staff reductions. The church has also seen its attendance plummet by nearly 50%, a direct consequence of the scandals that have rocked the congregation.
