Out of Mind and Sight, Tony Evan’s Media Ministry Chugs Along

Last June, Pastor Tony Evans of the Dallas megachurch Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship announced that he was stepping away from public ministry on account of sins he committed years ago, sharing in part on his church’s website:

“When we fall short of that standard due to sin, we are required to repent and restore our relationship with God. A number of years ago, I fell short of that standard. I am, therefore, required to apply the same biblical standard of repentance and restoration to myself that I have applied to others.”
…While I have committed no crime, I did not use righteous judgment in my actions. In light of this, I am stepping away from my pastoral duties and am submitting to a healing and restoration process established by the elders. This will afford me a needed time of spiritual recovery and healing.”

With nary a hint to congregants or ministry supporters of what this entailed -major or mild-, things have been quiet in the public. Evans is still out and about, recently visiting Eric Mason for a visit, but has not been in a pulpit since the announcement.

However, his social media have remained busy, and unlike other pastors caught up in sin, the spigot has not turned off.

Whoever is directing his ministry has shared nearly 50 videos to his YouTube channel since June, where he has almost 1,000,000 subscriber. Here, he continues to make a pretty penny as he gains thousands of followers and millions of views each month.

His X profile continues to post like usual, sharing sermons and quotes, and the same goes for his Instagram page, where he has nearly 700K followers receiving a steady supply of media. His ministry website the Urban Alternative, is likewise going strong, posting his content nearly daily to his 1.6 Million Facebook followers.

Earlier this month, Jonathan Evans, Tony’s son and the associate pastor at Oak Cliff Bible Fellowship, shared a video reflecting on his father’s situation, explaining that the news that his father was stepping down was a shock but that he believed he’d be back in business soon enough.

“It was a shock to us … he told us that he’s going to take a step back from ministry, go to a time of healing and restoration- a time that he needs. We’re all praying for his restoration, recovery, and for him to be fully back doing what he loves to do and what he’s called to do.”

Evans previously insisted in a Father’s Day sermon days that occurred days the revelation about his father that the elder Evans would soon make a triumphal comeback, offering, “When he returns, when my dad returns when that time comes, we going to celebrate a victory we already knew beforehand that we had.”

The way things look on the outside, however, it’s like he never left.

Evans a rank heretic whose heresies include (but are not limited to) Pelagianism (the denial of original sin), Inclusivism (you don’t have to be a Christian to be saved), and Limited Theism (the denial of God’s omnipotence). See more here.
