John MacArthur Recovering After Unexpected Surgery

Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, has given an update on the health of Pastor John MacArthur, informing the congregation that after a week of testing, the venerated elder underwent a medical procedure designed to clear a blockage in his arteries and that he would be taking a few weeks off to rest and recover.

MacArthur, 83, has had some health struggles over the last two weeks. He was unable to preach the second service at his church two weeks ago and did not preach the previous week, with Michael Reeves taking over that duty.

While we don’t know MacArthur’s diagnosis, generally speaking, blocked arteries occur when the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients from the heart to the rest of the body become narrowed or blocked by a buildup of plaque. This plaque comprises cholesterol, fat, and other substances in the blood.

Common in people over 60, blocked arteries can lead to serious health problems, such as chest pain, heart attacks and strokes. It is typically treated with lifestyle changes, medication, and surgery, such as:

  • Angioplasty and stenting, which uses a small balloon to open the blocked artery and a stent to keep it open
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery, which uses a blood vessel from another part of the body to bypass the blocked artery

The church informs that MacArthur “will take the next few weeks off from preaching to recover and to prepare for Shepherds Conference.” They say he’s “feeling better and is grateful for the opportunity to rest in the coming weeks” and ask supporters to “please continue to pray for our pastor’s recovery.”

Muckraker Julie Roys Equates John MacArthur and Master’s Seminary to Benny Hinn

Julie Roys’ discernment is like a hammer. The Julie Roys discernment hammer perceives everything in conservative evangelicalism as a nail, even if the object is a baby or an egg. Such was the case when Julie recently attacked the discernment of Costi Hinn for daring to associate with the likes of John MacArthur and Master’s Seminary. According to Julie, Costi Hinn apparently drinks the “Kool-Aid” when he listens to the teaching of Masters Seminary’s Dr. Steve Lawson.

Julie has spilt gallons of ink over the past few years digging up decades-old one-sided accounts of issues that involved John MacArthur in the most tangential ways in an attempt to discredit his ministry, because she is still mad at MacArthur for telling egalitarian false teacher Beth Moore to “Go Home”.

Now Roys has taken to Twitter to harass those like Costi, who find wisdom in pursuing a doctorate at a conservative Bible-based institution like The Master’s Seminary. In Julie’s eyes, a God-fearing teacher like Steve Lawson is selling Kool-Aid. If you find yourself believing the siren songs of Julie, Go listen to a Steve Lawson sermon and ask yourself, “If this is theological “Kool-Aid”, what is Julie sipping on?”

Binny Hinn preaches a false word of faith prosperity gospel, while MacArthur teaches the one true gospel, salvation by grace through faith in Christ alone. Comparing the ministry of wild-eyed-false-gospel preaching Benny Hinn to that of John MacArthur is akin to comparing Julie Roys to Justin Peters. Julie Roys is a muckraker, trying to dig up dirt on pastors and manufacture faux controversies, while Justin Peters is a faithful preacher and teacher who focuses on teaching that exposes doctrinal error and heresy in modern Christianity by examining false teachings in light of scripture.

Objective observers would note that Julie has numerous blind spots when addressing the cultural downgrade, punching right and attacking complementarians and conservatives regularly while ignoring stories that involve leftists promoting heretical doctrine, LGBTQ sexual deviancy, and critical theory in the church.

Grace Community Church Gives Update on Health of John MacArthur After Missed Sermon

Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, has given an update on the health of Pastor John MacArthur, 83, after it was widely reported that he was unable to preach the second service at his church on account of health problems.

After the venerated elder asked to to pull out, an elder at Grace Community Church informed the second service congregants:

“Just so you know, Pastor John had a bug this week and preached our first hour but asked if he might be able to take a break for the second hour. So Mike Riccardi is going to be answering the call. It’s pretty pretty amazing we have guys with sermons in their Bibles wherever you go and so Mike’s going to be here.”

The church released an update on their website and thankfully they say he is “doing well and just needs rest from a busy holiday week.”

Glad to hear it

John MacArthur Unable to Continue Preaching Second Service After Falling Ill

Many people are praying for Pastor John MacArthur, 83, after the venerated elder was unable to preach the second service, having at one point to “catch his breath” before plowing ahead through the first, and then taking leave of the next one. An elder at Grace Community Church informed the second service congregants:

“Just so you know, Pastor John had a bug this week and preached our first hour but asked if he might be able to take a break for the second hour. So Mike Riccardi is going to be answering the call. It’s pretty pretty amazing we have guys with sermons in their Bibles wherever you go and so Mike’s going to be here.”

Tim Hurd at the Bible Thumping Wingnut initially reported the story, with one of his commenters adding more context.

I attended the first service. Pastor John had gone up to the pulpit to preach and soon as he got there he had taken a second “to catch his breath.” He said he wasn’t sure why all of a sudden he was out of breathe and had made a few coughs. I think it was about 45 seconds though to a minute that took maybe, but he did go on to preach.

In the earlier part of his sermon he did crack a joke saying that he wanted us to get into the Bible so that we would stop worrying about him since we were all looking at him and I’m sure he noticed all the concerned faces in the church but he did state that he was feeling great. He did sound back to normal during the rest of the sermon, but I’m praying for Pastor John. I prayed for him during the service.

I have learned so much from that man and I thank God that He allowed me to see Pastor John preach these past few weeks at Grace Community Church. Happy New Year’s to all and God bless.

John MacArthur has trended on Twitter several times over the last few months, mostly for his continued strong stance against homosexuality and advocating for personal purity and sound biblical teaching.

Continue to pray for MacArthur, for his continued and enduring health.

John MacArthur Releases Scorching Open Letter to CA Governor Gavin Newsom

Pastor John MacArthur of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, has released an open letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom, blasting him for “the diabolical effects” of his worldview and policies, as well as the “many immoral decisions” he has “perpetrated against God and the people of our state.” MacArthur closes with a gospel message, encouraging him to repent and turn to Christ.

Governor Gavin Newsom September 29, 2022
1021 O Street, Suite 9000
Sacramento, CA 95814

Sir,Almighty God says in His Word, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:3). Scripture also teaches that it is the chief duty of any civic leader to reward those who do well and to punish evildoers (Romans 13:1–7). You have not only failed in that responsibility; you routinely turn it on its head, rewarding evildoers and punishing the righteous. The Word of God pronounces judgment on those who call evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20), and yet many of your policies reflect this unholy, upside-down view of honor and morality.

The diabolical effects of your worldview are evident in the statistics of California’s epidemics of crime, homelessness, sexual perversions (like homosexuality and transgenderism), and other malignant expressions of human misery that stem directly from corrupt public policy. I don’t need to itemize or elaborate on the many immoral decisions you have perpetrated against God and the people of our state, which have only exacerbated these problems. Nevertheless, my goal in writing is not to contend with your politics, but rather to plead with you to hear and heed what the Word of God says to men in your position.

“Let all kings bow down before Him, all nations serve Him” (Psalm 72:11).

“He who rules over men righteously, who rules in the fear of God, is as the light of
the morning when the sun rises” (2 Samuel 23:3–4).

“It is an abomination for kings to commit wicked acts, for a throne is established
on righteousness” (Proverbs 16:12).

What God said to Cyrus is a truth you should take to heart: “I am the LORD, and there is noIn mid-September, you revealed to the entire nation how thoroughly rebellious against God you are when you sponsored billboards across America promoting the slaughter of children, whom He creates in the womb (Psalm 139:13–16; Isaiah 45:9–12).

You further compounded the wickedness of that murderous campaign with a reprehensible act of gross blasphemy, quoting the very words of Jesus from Mark 12:31 as if you could somehow twist His meaning and arrogate His name in favor of butchering unborn infants. You used the name and the words of Christ to promote the credo of Molech (Leviticus 20:1–5). It would be hard to imagine a greater sacrilege.

Furthermore, you chose words from the lips of Jesus without admitting that in the same moment He gave the greatest commandment: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30). You cannot love God as He commands while aiding in the murder of His image-bearers.

Psalm 50:16–19 speaks to people who pervert the Word of God for their own sinful ends:

But to the wicked God says, “What right have you to recount My statutes And to take My covenant in your mouth? For you hate discipline, And you cast My words behind you. When you see a thief, you are pleased with him, And you associate with adulterers. You let your mouth loose in evil And you harness your tongue for deceit.”

My concern, Governor Newsom, is that your own soul lies in grave, eternal peril. “Each one of us will give an account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12). One day, not very long from now, you will face that reality. Nothing is more certain. “It is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). You will stand in the presence of the Holy God who created you, who is your Judge, and He will demand that you give an account for how you have flouted His authority in your governing, and how you have twisted His own Holy Word to rationalize it.

As you look over the precipice of eternity, what will your answer be? When you look ahead of you and see that nothing awaits you but eternal misery—the just punishment for your sins—what will

My plea to you, Sir, is that you would not let it come to that—that you would not go to that day of judgment apart from receiving forgiveness and righteousness through faith in Christ alone. In Psalm 50, after rebuking the wicked for uttering God’s words in a profane way, Scripture makes this promise: “Now consider this, you who forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there will be none to deliver. He who offers a sacrifice of thanksgiving glorifies Me; and he who orders his way, I shall show the salvation of God” (vv. 22–23).

So there is salvation for those who repent. Christ purchased full redemption for all who will turn from wickedness, forsake their evil thoughts and actions, and trust fully in Him as Lord and Savior. Our church, and countless Christians nationwide, are praying for your full repentance. Please respond to the gospel, forsake the path of wickedness you have pursued all your life, turn to Christ, ask for forgiveness, and use your office to advance the cause of righteousness (as is your duty) instead of undermining it (as has been your pattern).

Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. Let the
wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to
the LORD, and He will have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will
abundantly pardon (Isaiah 55:6–7).

Governor Newsom, “now is the acceptable time, behold, now is the day of salvation”
(2 Corinthians 6:2).

For the Master,
John MacArthur
Pastor-Teacher

Editor’s Note. While the letter is quite excellent, we do have a quibble, which is the exegesis he provided in the first paragraph. He writes “Scripture also teaches that it is the chief duty of any civic leader to reward those who do well and to punish evildoers (Romans 13:1–7)”

While those verses certainly say that the role of government is to punish evildoers, nowhere does it say in this verse or any other he citied that the chief duty is to “reward those who do well.” It may be true that this is what they should do, but that is not derived from the text he provided and is an incautious interpretation at best.

Critical Race Theory Advocate Ligon Duncan is Teaching at John MacArthur’s Seminary. Why?

Dr. J. Ligon Duncan III, the Chancellor and CEO of Reformed Theological Seminary, has been drifting in a big way for years. He took a pot shot at John MacArthur for telling Beth Moore to ‘go home’ a few years ago, partnered with gay priests at conference events, had a CRT syllabus at his University, said there is great wisdom in a pastor never letting congregants know which side of a political conflict he leans or where he stands on major political issues, and famously lamented that his black friends have a really good reason not to trust him: because he was a white mandrinking the bitter lies of the burgeoning progressive movement.

Ligon Duncan is not someone to be trusted, as Justin Peters recently pointed out at John MacArthur’s own 2022 Truth Matters Conference.

So why is he being brought in as a teacher at the Masters Seminary?

Scott Ardavanis, lead pastor of Grace Church of the Valley and Dean of the Masters Seminary Central Valley location, piped in Duncan to teach a class in pastoral ministry, praising him for his ministry.

We’ve said it before: after signing and promoting the Dallas Statement, MacArthur turned around and not only invited the woke trio of Al Mohler, Mark Dever, and Ligon Duncan to speak but platformed them on stage. The Q&A was an absolute debacle, although thanks to Phil Johnson those men were at least put on the spot to squirm and sweat.

The Dallas Statement was supposed to be a line in the sand, as important as The Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, or at least, that’s what many believers concluded. However, it turned out to be an irrelevant blip in history, hardly worth noting. It’s long dead. Not only is it dead, but in the words of JD Hall, “The Dallas Statement is dead and John MacArthur killed It.”

The statement became meaningless when those that were involved in the signing continued to promote the very people it was designed to warn against. Without teeth, what protection from dangerous teachings did it have to offer the church? MacArthur once said in regards to Duncan, Mohler, and Dever, “I’ll fight error, but I won’t fight my friends.” That’s pretty difficult when his friends are the ones promoting error. It is difficult when Ligon Duncan is being given a platform of influence, teaching the next generation of pastors in your own college.

Now, we are not saying that MacArthur had anything to do with the choice to have Duncan speak and teach at the seminary. In fact, maybe Scott Ardavanis doesn’t know about all the recent shenanigans Duncan has been up to. We’re very open to that, and that’s why we’re not going off; because they’ve earned the benefit of a doubt. Still, if this is something that those in his circle are going to keep on doing, then MacArthur needs to soften up his stance a little on the social justice gospel and not be so hard on critical race theory, lest he is guilty of being a hypocrite.

Either CRT is bad or it’s not. Either Duncan saying “It’s gonna take us 100 years to overcome the trust issues that have come out of (slavery). I tell people: my very best black friends have trouble trusting me, for really good reasons. Because people like me have been doing awful things to them and to their families for four centuries. You know? It’s gonna take a while before the trust issues that exist between otherwise good friends in Christ are gonna be addressed. We’ve got generational issues here.” is bad or it’s not.

Our stance? The church has been battered by progressivism and ravaged by Critical Race Theory, along with all the deviltry that comes with it. It is an ever-present threat, becoming more and more entrenched as it swallows congregations whole. Men like Duncan, who were once esteemed as unbending giants, are revealed to have saplings for spines, a previously unknown love for nuance and whimsy, a fascination with intersectionality and standpoint theory, and a damned-if-I-do dive into pure and abject theological and cultural squishiness. Until he repents of his previous positions, there’s no reason he should be viewed as a trusted instructor.

So why is he teaching there again?

Prominent Christian Leaders Introduce Statement Against Last 2 years of Govt Totalitarianism

Several well-known Christian leaders have announced and released a new Statement called The Frankfurt Declaration of Christian & Civil Liberties.

In the same vein as the Danvers Statement on biblical manhood and womanhood, the Nashville Statement on gender and sexuality (many of the same signatories), and the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, the Frankfurt Declaration has been issued by “A few concerned pastors from different continents, moved by an emergent totalitarianism of the State over all realms of society, and particularly the Church, and the disregard of God-given and constitutionally guaranteed rights during the Covid crisis, joined in common cause to craft a solemn declaration, which seeks to address these threats with the timeless truths of God’s Word.”

Signed by pastors from all across the world and varying denominations, some of the more notable North American signatories include Voddie Baucham* John McArthur, Joe Boot, Tom Buck, Josh Buice, James Coates, Phil Johnson, Jeff Durbin, Jacob Reaume, Justin Peters, Aaron Rock, Tim Stephens, Doug Wilson, and James White.

Consisting of five articles, they serve as a repudiation of the last two years of totalitarian government policies and practices on the citizenry and the church. Summarized by snippets in the denials, their points are prescient.

Article 2: “We therefore deny that human governments are morally and ideologically neutral and always know or seek what is good for their citizens and that their narrative should be unconditionally trusted. We reject any deception, fear-mongering, propagandizing, and indoctrination by the State and mass media, and all reporting on critical world issues which is premature, selective, or ideologically manipulative. We further reject the assertions of any so-called “scientific consensus” which abandons the scientific method and ignores or suppresses the concerns of dissident voices.”

Article 3: “We therefore deny the dehumanizing actions of a governmental authority or any other
institution to subject any person to psychological manipulation and intimidation. This includes
fostering suspicion of others by portraying them as potential threats to the common and
individual good. We likewise oppose the State’s mandating of medical decisions for its citizens,
and the criminalizing, enforced segregation, vocational disempowerment, and any other
deprivation of rights of persons who choose not to comply with their government’s medical
policies.

We thus reject all forms of medical coercion and any restrictions on individual
freedoms for people who are not infected with any contagious, life-threatening disease; this
includes the implementation of vaccine passes, social distancing, or mask-wearing as a general
prerequisite for access to public places or for participation in work or social life.”

Article 4: “We therefore deny totalitarian ideologies of governments which do not recognize the
boundaries of their authority and usurp the authority delegated by God to the Church or the
family. In particular, we reject the tendency of governments to centralize beliefs and conduct
for their citizens by creating an authoritarian society in which the State is absolute.”

Article 5: “We therefore deny that any other authority has jurisdiction over the Church to regulate any
of its affairs in matters of faith and practice, or to relegate its activities to a non-essential status. We thus repudiate all actions of the State that impose coercive measures over the Church and criminalize, inhibit, or regulate any of its activities which are undertaken as acts of service toward its Lord.”

Is John MacArthur Really a Super-Duper Slave-Lovin’ Racist?

As the twenty-first-century Christian downgrade continues at a blistering pace, those without roots don’t stand a chance in the face of strong cultural headwinds. Cultural issues produce fault lines between faithful Gospel teaching and popular false teaching that derives its legitimacy from the approval of the world. Pastor John MacArthur, author of Slave: The Hidden Truth About Your Identity In Christ, wrote his work on the identity of believers as slaves (doulos) to Christ prior to the popularization of Critical Race Theory in churches and denominations. The slave-master metaphor was the most frequently used metaphor in the New Testament to describe a believer’s relationship with God. MacArthur highlighted the significance of this fact in his book.

As followers of Jesus, we call ourselves “Christians,” but the fact is this word only appears three times in the Bible. In the New Testament, you’ll find a host of terms that identify the followers of Jesus, but there is one metaphor used more frequently than any other. Slave. That’s right. The first Christians, having been galvanized by the words of Jesus, gave up everything, and called themselves slaves of Christ. Now you can learn why this word best described early Christ-followers- and you’ll see how an understanding of this truth changes the way to follow Him now. This discovery will unveil the riches of your salvation in a radically, new way.

MacArthur recognized that slavery in early America taints the Western understanding of slavery, making it difficult for believers to understand the context of slavery in the New Testament. American slavery was the form of slavery strictly forbidden by the law of God and punishable by death.

Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death.

-Exodus 21:16

However, in the context of the New Testament, which was written in the Roman world, slavery was a much different institution than the chattel slavery of the United States. In the Roman empire, ten to twenty percent of the population owed allegiance to a master. Doulos became subservient to masters for various reasons. Some became slaves to escape destitution, as their new master was able to give provisions in exchange for service and devotion. Some chose slavery as a means of lifestyle, while others found themselves enslaved as a result of indebtedness or warfare. Slavery was a part of the societal structure of Rome, and the apostles drew heavily on the metaphor. James begins his epistle by identifying as a “slave (doulos) of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.” MacArthur explains:

It should be said that the Bible never condemns slavery – never – and if Jesus and the apostles came to abolish slavery, they failed miserably – they didn’t come to do that. The Bible never condones slavery, it simply recognizes that it exists, and it just happens to be the best way to describe a believer’s relationship to Christ – and that’s why it becomes this dominant paradigm. If you think that this is a problem – if you think this is a problem for us, with a distant memory of what slavery was – if you think that’s a problem for us, think of what a problem it was in the New Testament time.

There are about 12 million slaves living in the Mediterranean world. To any free Greek, or free Roman, slavery was viewed with disdain; it was a despicable way to live. The supreme virtue for a Greek or a Roman was freedom; freedom. They despised slavery. Why? Slaves had no freedom; slaves had no rights. They could not defend themselves in a court of law, nor could they go to a court of law to seek justice. They couldn’t give testimony in a court of law. They couldn’t be citizens. They couldn’t join the military. They could not own property.

And in pagan religion, no follower of any deity ever called himself a slave of his God. The Greeks referred to their relationship as philos, not doulos. Philos means friend – they were a friend to the God. The idea of being a slave to anyone, even to a deity, was despicable in the Greek world, so here is another component in what Paul in 1 Corinthians talks about, the foolishness of the cross, the stumbling block that it was to the Greek mind.

We’re trying to convey a gospel of a crucified Jew who wants to make you His slave. You couldn’t have come up with a more difficult message to communicate to people who honored freedom and had nothing but disdain for slavery, and yet it’s in that kind of environment – and I’ll just give you a quick little run down…Listen to this – Romans 1:1: “Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus,” this says – there’s no such word in the Greek.

Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus” – and that’s the launch point – “Paul, a slave of Christ Jesus” – not “Paul, an apostle and preacher, incidentally, also a slave” – “Paul, a slave.” In Galatians chapter 1, verse 10, he says, “I am – am I now seeking the favor of men or of God?” Now you’re getting to the heart of slavery, right? It’s not about seeking the favor of men, it’s about seeking the favor of God. “Am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a slave of Christ.” Why?

Because one principle of slavery, everybody understood; Jesus put it this way: “No man can be a slave to two masters” – that is an impossibility. Paul says, “I can’t therefore be the slave of man and the slave of God.” In Philippians, again he identifies himself this way, only with his companion: “Paul and Timothy” – right off the starting point – “slaves of Christ Jesus.” “Epaphras” – you remember Colossians 4:12 – “slave of Christ.” James 1:1: “James, a slave of Jesus Christ.” “Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ.”

That’s what we’re working with here.

Eager to distort the truth of scripture and the teaching that MacArthur derived directly from God’s word, Rick Pidcock of fake news site Baptist News Global wrote a hit piece against MacArthur’s teaching on slavery as a scriptural metaphor. Pidcock, has been fighting against the patriarchy for several years, writing a song to encourage Beth Moore to “Please Don’t Go Home”, and encouraging his followers to “re-imagine deconstruction.”

Pidcock uses bits and pieces of MacArthur’s teaching separated from context to create the narrative that MacArthur is a rabid white supremacist and promoter of chattel slavery as a societal good.

For MacArthur, slavery appears to be more than simply a secondary issue Christians can disagree about. He believes slavery is central. In fact, he believes slavery is the gospel. So for MacArthur to reject slavery would be to reject the gospel. In The Gospel According to Jesus, MacArthur said, “The gospel is an invitation to slavery.”

Julie Roys, who operates in much the same way, promoted Pidcock’s story.

Julie’s Twitter post contained a heavily edited excerpt of a Grace to You short video by Pastor MacArthur on the metaphor of slavery as the model for a Christian’s relationship to Christ. Julie’s video is less than a minute and a half, while the Grace to You video is less than three minutes. One might ask why it would be necessary to edit such a short video. Of course, Julie has never been a big fan of reporting on the whole truth in context. Shortly after posting her slander, Roys made the claim that GTY had taken the video down in an effort to cover Pastor John’s tracks.

Despite Roys’ claims, the full video remains up on the GTY Youtube channel. Perhaps it was really Julie who didn’t want her followers to see the true context of the whole video.

Discontent with being left out of the leftist MacArthur-bashing Twitter party, Dr. Michael Bird, a so-called “New Testament Lecturer” who is best known for his “scholarly” speculation on the erections of Jesus, should know better than to attack MacArthur on this point joined the failed journalist/songwriter Pidcock and half-truth reporting Roys in a leftist twitter pile-on.

Believers would do well to note those who participated in the foolishness of clearly mischaracterizing the statements of MacArthur. Note them and avoid them like the plague, because their reward, the approval of carnal men is a clear sign of where their treasure lies. They are slaves to the opinions of this world.

Men like MacArthur are slaves to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Progressives Wail and Gnash Their Teeth After SBC Pastor is Caught Taking Pictures with John MacArthur

Critics of John MacArthur found themselves hurt, upset, and all-around emotionally apoplectic after progressive SBC pastor Dwight Mckissic was seen taking a picture with him at the Conservative Baptist Network event in Anaheim, the day before the SBC convention.

Framing it as a complete betrayal of sexual abuse victims (on account of widely discredited reporting by Julie Roys that JMac somehow was complicit in abuse coverup) and…uh…apparently women in general, the vast majority of McKissic’s fans and friends voiced their deep displeasure of the incident, tweeting out.

Naturally, Kyle J Howard had to get in on the action, resulting in him being even further traumatized by the turn of events and casting it as a betrayal.

John MacArthur Acknowledges Online Attackers In Latest Sermon

Even as we learn about more bad behavior for Julie Roys, Pastor John Macarthur, the subject of 50 articles from Roys poorly detailing his alleged malfeasance, explained in Sunday’s sermon that he has no intention of directly responding to the allegations, choosing instead to allow himself to be attacked and saying he will not retaliate or curse her back for her misdeeds. He explains:

We don’t have the right to be angry at things that come at us. It’s very hard to be righteously angry about that because we get our own egos and self-protectiveness caught up in it. We don’t have a right to be angry, to revile back to people even when they falsely accuse us.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly. Do not be wise in your own estimation. Never repay evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all people. If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all people. Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written: “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord. “But if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:14-21.

…People have recently been saying to me “you’re getting pretty hammered on the internet, the people attacking you and assaulting you, are you going to respond?”

Yes. The only thing I can say is, I want to bless those who persecute me and not curse. I never want to pay back evil for evil to anyone. As much as is possible, as far as it depends on me, I want to be at peace with all men. So you can’t pick a fight with me, I’m not going to fight.

‘But what about the wrong they’re doing?’ Never take your own revenge beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written ‘Vengeance is mine. I will repay says the Lord’. You think God doesn’t know? You think somebody’s getting away with something?

Guess again.

God keeps those accounts. I don’t need to deal with that. I don’t need to seek revenge. I don’t need to retaliate. I don’t need to curse back. I just need to do what Jesus said and commit himself to a faithful creator.

While John MacArthur and Grace Community Church have not released a public statement regarding the recent scandal that ax-grinders and faith-bad journalists have been lobbying against them- one that started off as questioning the proprietary of the church discipline against a member 20 years ago and has since devolved into wild claims that anyone who doesn’t see the situation their way is guilty of harboring and defending child abuse,- the church has sent out a form email to anyone requesting more information about their position.

The response explains that their church is not likely to issue a public statement about it, citing the pledge of privacy and confidentiality of pastoral counseling sessions. Though other stories that Roys has written do not involve the confidentiality of pastoral counseling, it is unlikely that GCC and the elders there will respond as well.
