A Decade After Being Ousted for Sexual Misconduct, Is Bill Gothard Staging a Comeback?

Bill Gothard is an American Christian minister and speaker who founded the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP) in 1961, a non-profit organization that teaches biblical principles for family, education, government, and business.

Popular with many conservative, IFB, and homeschool parents, he was perhaps best known for his Advanced Training Institute (ATI), a homeschooling program with a curriculum based on the Sermon on the Mount, and his strict teaching on proper Christian behavior, which focused on the importance of following biblical principles in all aspects of life, emphasizes the authority of the Bible, personal responsibility, and the concept of a biblical “chain of command.” For decades the organization put on conferences, training seminars, and published books, booklets, and other materials to promote its teachings.

In latter years, Gothard and the IBLP faced increasing pressure and scrutiny. Critics raised several concerns, including allegations of sexual misconduct, lack of transparency and accountability for abuse victims, cult-like practices, rigid gender roles, legalism, the promotion of cruel child-rearing practices, and suspect theological interrelations of the scripture. Former members have reported feeling isolated and controlled by the organization, and many have criticized IBLP’s teachings as being overly restrictive and rigid.

Some of the biggest proponents of the IBLP were Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, who many saw as the “face” of the teachings and spoke at their summer camp. Recently, their Jinger Duggar was sharply critical of the movement and how it impacted her upbringing, writing in her new book ‘Becoming Free Indeed’ that the practices of the IBLP were “built on rules, not God’s Word.”

In 2014, 34 women came forward with stories of sexual harassment and misconduct by Gothard, including 4 who allege molestation. This led to the resignation of several IBLP board members and his role at the organization. Several alleged victims soon filed a lawsuit against Bill Gothard and IBLP but withdrew it in 2018, citing complexities and the statute of limitations.

After the allegations were revealed, the Board released a statement saying:

Mr. Gothard has acted in an inappropriate manner, and the Board realizes the seriousness of his lack of discretion and failure to follow Christ’s example of being blameless and above reproach….At this time, the Board unanimously agrees that Mr. Gothard is not permitted to serve in any counseling, leadership, or Board role within the IBLP ministry.”

Since leaving, Gothard has been busy, hosting men’s gatherings in his home, writing several new books, and expanding EmbassyUniversity.com.

According to close friend Bob Cosby, a decorated army veteran, emergency department physician, and IBLP alumni, he has been in contact with Gothard, who told him his reinstatement to the IBLP is imminent, making the claim in a private Facebook group dedicated to supporting him.

If so, this would be major reversal for the organization, which has been steadily losing millions of dollars over last decade, and may feel that Gothard’s return to the helm would steady and right the ship.

We’ve reached out to the IBLP but did not receive a response at the time of publishing.

Brian and Bobbie Houston Announce Ministry Comeback Event!

Seven months ago Brian Houston was ousted from his role as the Global Senior Pastor of Hillsong Church, after facing allegations of sexual impropriety and an addiction to alcohol.

Five months ago he released an apology to everyone that he hurt, interweaving multiple instances promising he will continue to be active in the ministry in some way, repeatedly stressing that the best is yet to come, the final chapters of his life haven’t been written and that God isn’t finished with him yet.

Two months ago, he preached a ‘comeback’ sermon at the multicampus Christian Faith Church in Seattle, WA, repeatedly stressing that God’s plan is to give everyone an amazing legacy, and no matter how many mistakes you make, it’s never too late to choose to have a legacy for your future.

Now, Houston and his wife have announced a special event on November 9th, 2022 that will be streamed across the world.

Billed as An Evening with Bobbie and Brian, the event will be an “evening of connection, fellowship, and enjoying community” where the Houston’s will “preach, and they pray people will be blessed and God will be Glorified” while noting specifically that “Great things start with small beginnings!

In short, they’re back!

With many within Hillsong convinced that Houston got a raw deal and he and his wife Bobbie making multiple comments on social media decrying the shabby way they were treated, promising that they would soon tell their side of the story, the prospect of the Houston’s starting up a new church ministry is not a matter of ‘if but ‘when.’

Given the popularity and loyalty he still enjoys within the flock, this new endeavor will certainly prove to be a smashing success.

Carl Lentz Speaks Out for the The First Time in Two Years. Is he Making a Comeback?

After nearly two years of silence, Carl Lentz has remerged on social media, updating his Instagram profile with a photoshoot of his family, captioned:

Its been a challenging road but we are alive, we are at peace and thanks to the grace of God we are TOGETHER. Not sure what the future holds for us, but we do know that we face it as a family and for that I am so thankful. My deepest thanks to our friends and family that have shown us such unconditional love and grace when we have desperately needed it. Forever grateful.. we are hopeful about what is ahead!

His wife Laura has echoed this sentiment, explaining that she’s proud of Carl for humbling himself and not defending himself, but instead kept quiet publicly:

Yep, it has been challenging and hell yeah it’s taken a LOT of work the past 22 months (but who’s counting 😂) to make our marriage what it has become, & we will never stop working on ourselves, for this marriage and for our kids! I know there are many that don’t or would never do what I chose to do, and that’s ok, it’s not for everyone!!

I look forward to sharing our story, how I came to that conclusion and I think it’s going to help a lot of people.. But I am so proud of my husband & for the responsibility he’s taken! Mostly I’m grateful for a man who humbled himself & didn’t try to defend himself, he has kept quiet publicly and he has remained focused on the one thing that matters most-our family!

18 months-2 years is the time when most Christian pastors emerge to announce that they are starting new churches as part of the Evangelical Ministry Restoration and Reintegration Process, which we’ve discussed here. It is the system whereby disgraced pastors who get kicked out of their churches, usually for sexual sins and committing adultery, become reintegrated into Christendom and restored to their former glory, through a 10 step process. Currently, Lentz is one phase two.

These posts from Laura are more conciliatory than they have been in the past. Days after the Hillsong-commissioned,  51-page barn-burner of a booklet titled “Internal Investigation Report Regarding Carl Lentz and Other Matters” was leaked where her husband outlined to investigators several different instances of sexual misconduct he engaged in, along with stories of dysfunction and the culture of sin that permeated the leadership at Hillsong NY, she broke her silence.

In an Instagram post, Laura, who is now an interior decorator and previously revealed that the last year gave her PTSD-like experiences, went on the offensive, saying that they soon will share their truth in the face of “RELENTLESS lies, accusations and hypocritical scapegoating that has sadly been so prevalent” as it pertains to their time at Hillsong, writing:

My family has remained silent throughout this ordeal because our priority has been the healing of our family.”

“This does not mean we do not have a lot to say! When the time is right we have a lot to say about what has happened as well as speaking directly to the RELENTLESS lies, accusations and hypocritical scapegoating that has sadly been so prevalent. Until then, we are so grateful for the constant support of so many. Your kindness has meant the world to us. We are looking forward to a brighter day!”

While Laura was wronged by her husband’s infidelity, she is far from innocent in the rest of it. As one of the primary leaders of Hillsong NYC during its heyday, she oversaw the years of spoils, excesses, and scandals, benefitting from all the bad behavior that was going on at the church and being fully complicit in it.

The Lentz family is already allegedly threatening legal action against the Christian Post for sharing leaked details of the confidential investigation into Hillsong.
